Good evening all, been lurking a while and finally decided to join, lots of info here and glad I did. I just bought an old '94 Volvo WIA64 with the Volvo D12 engine and an Eaton 10 speed. I drove it 1100 miles home after I bought it and it runs and drives perfect, I am really pleased. There are a couple of issues I am wondering about: the preheater indicator in the instrument panel says on, and, I get some kind of intermittent violent sounding vibration that I hear and feel in the floor at highway speeds on flat ground. It may happen every few seconds, for a few seconds, and it may not do it again for an hour. Sounds almost like a really bad bearing when it's happening, but I cannot find any issues, including the drive line. Anyone else had these problems of have any ideas? Thanks in advance for any help...........-Curtis.

Preheater issue could be air intake temp sensor or the preheater circuit or grid itself. For the vib I would drop the driveline and check the slip yoke for moving free and also look at ride height and controls.

    pre heater!!!
I am thinking you are talking about the fuel pre heater,
, most of them have a drain valve, to drain every day of use,,,fuel heater water separation unit ,,
,,,they also have a filter ,, like a coffee filter on the fuel heater water separation unit..
.I clean my filter ... once a week with starter fluid and put it back in for two years now and if it gets to where it will not come clean get a new one
,, about 20.00 and the thing about weird sounds i had the same thing happen to me and I asked A 12 year ken worth tech he said thats the million dollar question could be any thing ,,, drive tires are they worn in at least 5000 miles,, carrier bearing , 3 axle aliment and then he said just drive it,,, till it breaks and dont worry about it till it does,,, I see you are a long time driver so I know you know just exactly what I am saying ,,,

Indicator as per book is engine preheater. I am thinking maybe a glow plug open? Not sure it has glow plugs as I am not really versed on Volvo engines, but I know it has a manifold heater. As far as the noise is concerned, when it is happening, it's there in prevalence. When it's not there, it's silent. Tires or ujoints or carrier bearings aint gonna do that. Sounds and feels like a harmonic resonance of some sort?

I'm fairly certain your truck uses a preheater grid in the air intake. The vibration coming and going could be explained by a change in ride height while driving and the frozen driveline slip yoke unable to compensate length for the change in height.

sure grease and w d 40 every thing ,,,, listen and do an air test .with engine off,.... for leveling valves.ride height...if that was the problem he would know it cause all hell would be coming loose...these are minor problems with this age of truck so don't over complete the problems...

I'm convinced that it is on all the time because of an open in one of the systems the ECM monitors, I just gotta figure out which one.
