Hay, I have a quick question. I'm just trying to put mymind at ease here. I have a lot of driving experience, but never drove a manualtransmission. Do you think there is a good chance this will set me back, or isthis somewhat common with new CDL students? Thanks in advance.
New to manual

You'll be fine! -
The main thing I saw people were having issues with for the first few days while I was in School, was that they were always forgetting to put clutch in when stopping.
Other than that ,due to double clutching everybody says It is better not to have driven a manual trans car. -
Having been a trainer before, I would much rather teach/train somone who has only driven a straight shift truck vs someone who started out in a car and tries to shift my truck like one. You'll be fine.

I cant thank you enough guys. Its good to know the trainers would rather train, then retrain.

It might be easier to learn if you don't know how to drive a stick...

I agree. Going from a car manual transmission to a truck is a little harder than starting out fresh. You have to unlearn the car way. I would always push the clutch in before getting the truck stopped. Also would push the clutch in too far. After awhile it all came together though.
-
Wait let me clarify. I would take the truck out of gear before coming to a stop.
-
Might be easier for you since you don't have bad habits to break.

I recently graduated a CDL school. Went in with no experience. By the time I graduated, had a pretty good handle on it. I found downshifting to be more of an adjustment simply because I didn't find it a natural thing to tap the accelerator when trying to stop a moving vehicle. However, in no time at all, it just "clicked". Now it's just a matter of becoming a bit smoother. That will come with time...or so I'm told : )
You'll do fine.Duffield Thanks this.
