Yup, as predicted the big time vets who have been doing this since the OP was a fetus find everything this guy has done as unacceptable. It's the same type that blabber on the CB and sit at the Country Pride complaining about everyone but themselves. Im sure you are all friendly at heart but he didn't injure anyone. And if any kind of accident is going to happen to a new guy it's a backing one. Not suggesting he is right in all of this, but someone needs to kick the legs off of these righteous chairs some of you sit in. Nobody is perfect.

He was not a new driver. he had over 2 years experience.
And I for one have no sympathy for backing accidents- Entire time I have been driving I have never hit anything backing a trl. I have bent a fairing turning a trl around because I did not walk down a long driveway and see there was not room to turn around at the end. And I ripped a couple of hinges off a door pulling out of a dock next to a wall. But have never hit anything backing up, And I have miles in the millions with dock del in the thousands and to this day I will ask for help to back into a tight spot.. I have even refused to back into a few receiver docks and was told others did it what is my problem? I just replied well I guess they are better then me or more willing to risk damage.
Stuff happens, to old salts and new meat but you can't praise the company you work for and then call them a turd because they fired you for being negligent. And now days many shippers and receivers have cameras up so if you don't report damage you still get fired when they call it in. Just like the May driver that ran over some flowers in a parking lot when I worked there and did not report it. Sure May sucks, I worked there and gave my keys back after 6mos. But I did not diduse they sucked like the OP after he was fired. -
Trucking isn't as simple as it was 20 plus years ago. Because of liability issues, it has forced the industry to manage everything very tightly.
Fuel is the number #1 cost for a company and if it's not managed, that company will most likely go out of business. It would simply blow most people's minds if they new how much money could be saved in fuel cost by simply managing where the fuel is purchased, shifting the truck properly and managing the speed. Because May manages that tightly, they are able to offer a quite competitive wage in this industry.
Customers have become very particular about when they receive their freight and their tolerance for late loads is zero. Some of your major customers will throw away your bid if you have 99.8% on time rate. They want 99.9% or better. Therefore, on time deliveries have to be managed tightly with the drivers in order to keep getting the freight. Not only does it have to be managed tightly but it has to be managed legally so we don't effect the CSA rating for a company.
Accidents are going to tear that CSA rating down the quickest. Anything safety related will. No trucking company or independent operator can afford to take the risk of hiring employees who show a pattern of having accidents. May has a very high CSA rating and because of that they get privileges such as the PrePass that goes in the truck. The drivers benefit from a good CSA rating.
Freight costs are very high. Most freight is tendered to a company through the computer these days. Some times that information varies from what the customer really wants. Therefore, when a driver loads out of a facility with a temp controlled load, May Trucking Company wants the driver to call and verify what the bill of lading reflects. That is the legal document when it comes to negotiating any potential freight claims. May Trucking Company isn't trying to micromanage the driver. They are simply trying to be thorough so they can provide good service to our customers which in the long run benefits their employees by providing jobs and wage increases.
Did you know that during this economy crunch that May Trucking Company never laid off a driver? They never decreased the driver's wage? As of matter of fact, they have been able to provide raises to the driver through this tough economy. This is because May does manage their business tightly.
May recognizes the importance of the driver. The driver is the only revenue producing employee for the company. With out the driver, there is no need for the office staff. I believe that the majority of May's employees live and breath this theory.
May provides some of the best equipment in the industry. May trades or sells their trucks before they reach 500,000 miles. The equipment is well maintained and new in comparison. Drivers can take pride in their equipment and have peace of mind knowing the equipment is well enough maintained that they aren't going to be spending large amounts of time broke down or in fear of getting inspected and having any issues with the truck go on their CSA rating too.
I'm sorry that jedi left with hard feelings towards the company but it does sound like he's lashing out because he was fired and not because the company wasn't fair and good to him while he was an employee. Unfortunately, until he is able to take full responsibility of why he was released from the company, he may not learn and grow from it. It's time to brush the dirt off, hold your head high and move on.
