It can really be frustrating when you see some of these carriers coming in and slicing the rates to the point where no one is making money. It really doesn't make any sense. I understand what you are saying about moving into a different segment of the industry. I have some business that I am looking at that will require an RN or double drop. I called the dealer where I bought my last trailer and he told me that a new RGN spec'd out the way I want would run $80-90,000. You can sometimes find a good used unit. Steps decks, RGN's, etc., really hold their value. If you are serious bout making the move I would have some business lined up. You may do more sitting with an RGN than with something like a step deck. You will certainly do more deadheading. I won't tell you not to do it, but I would look around at rates where you want to run and see if there is sufficient business and decent enough rates to make it worthwhile. If you want to do open deck you might consider starting with a flat or step deck. They are less expensive to purchase and there is a lot of freight for both.

BREAKING NEWS!!! trucking is shady. it's always been shady. soon as somebody finds that company that is perfect, please hit me up. i'd like to lease my truck on there.
