I am waiting on my turn for drivers training through a school here and in doing so I have been doing my due diligence in choosing the right company for me and my situation. With that being said I have been in contact with Schneider and looking at the Military Apprenticeship due to having GI Bill left.

My question is this. I am looking at the pros and cons to both the OTR and Regional here in NE Kansas. I was wondering how the regional worked as far as when you come home and if I would be parking truck elsewhere or if it went home with me? I also was looking at how a straight OTR tour would look living in KS. I have seen the world for the military over the last 6-8 years with 3 tours. Thinking that driving our beautiful country while making money doing it sounds like a nice change of pace. I have no real home life right now as it is and other than finding a temporary home for my pup (with family while gone), I am thinking that OTR sounds pretty good. I was wondering if heading near the house if a scheduled stop off was possible on occasion while passing through. I live just north of Topeka on 75 HWY. After reading a ton of posts on here I have a pretty good feel for the pay and bennies.

Thanks and inside look and comments would be greatly appreciated.

If I were you, I'd try and get on the regional in Des Moines over the regional in Topeka. Depending on where exactly you live, it may not be possible, but if you get on in Topeka, good luck. Get everything from Scott or Brent in writing, as that office tells you what you want to hear to your face, and then turns around and sends you a qualcomm with the 'real' information as they are walking out the door for the day. Cover your ##### and you should be fine. Lots of Home Depot freight out of Topeka, with a lot of grain backhauls to KC, KS from Colorado.

I run regional in the north east and if they work the regional drivers out there like they do here, you'll find that you get plenty of home time but at a loss in earnings. If you really have no tethers to stay more local, I'd say go over the road and earn your nest egg.

Thanks guys for the info. And absolutely Sharkster, I learned that from the military. If it is not in writing then it didn't happen or was not said. I am leaning more that way treedodger as I don't have much holding me to home. As long as I can get my hometime secured for my daughters graduation in a couple years we are good. I have plenty of time to lock down my future and make my mark by then.
I should be through training in Beloit by the end of the month and will be hopefully hired on by mid to late june. Have a few items to finish up with my transition from the military to civ life. Thanks again and hope to see you guys on the road soon. Be careful and take care.

Thanks Sharkster and I am currently in Ohio on load 3. I gotta figure out how to quit running out my 70 but start of last week was rough so had no time to fall back on and it is taking a couple days to catch up only had 2 hours that I got today and 9 tomorrow but will have 13 day after that at midnight. So quick question do I just run less hours and take longer breaks or ? the crazy part is if I do that then it screws up my trip plan as far as time. Keepin her sunny side up and rubber down. Be in NY tomorrow.

My DOT breaks tend to be between 11 and 12 hours. I try to start every day around 0600, the earlier I shut down, the longer my DOT break ends. I try not to take 10 hour breaks as my start time will quickly creep earlier and earlier until I'm running nights and sleeping days (which I struggle with long term). 10 hour breaks also make it more challenging to manage your 70 hour clock. I will only run on average 9 hours a day. I try not to let lines 3& 4 get over 11 if I can help it. Once you get to the recap it's easy to manage your 70, the trick is getting there.

As for it screwing up your trip plan - as long as you make the delivery window you're fine. Don't try and keep up with the times that come with the load. Most of the time those are computer generated figuring that you'll drive basically straight thru. Sometimes I beat them, sometimes I don't, but I don't care either way.

    Good luck.

Thanks gentlerodger. Yeah I am getting there. Figuring things out and things are coming with time but that is all I got now and am getting the hang of it. I figure the next 3 months will be the roughest. After that smooth sailing. It is already getting that way especially when it clicks like it did with the trip planning. I figured out what i did wrong and now almost getting it without the sheet. Just gotta take into consideration what i am picking up for hours. That was the hard part. But will try to get days and nights flipped once I get back off this jury duty and reset I will get this week. Heading home this week for jury duty on Thurs. Thanks for the help.
