I have decided to buy a used trailer from a BCO in Texas. I live in Florida. In order to register a vehicle in Florida, I have to bring it to a police station or DMV office to have the VIN number verified. That means deadheading home with the trailer, because I cannot lease it on with Landstar until I own it.
My other choice is to pay sales tax on it in Texas of almost $800, and register it there, then take it to the Dallas terminal to have it leased on. I'm almost sure Florida will charge me sales tax too, as they did on my tractor.
Did any of you buy your trailer and let Landstar register it? If so, was it complicated, and how much was it? I have my tractor registered through them, as I wanted to make it easier while I was getting started with Landstar. I will be transferring the plate to Florida in the future, but for now, I'm happy here, and I don't have a problem with it.
With my tractor, I just had the dealer fax them a copy of the bill of sale, and they sent me the plate. Is it that easy with a trailer? I could easily have the current owner send it to them.
I'm probably over complicating this, but I appreciate any advice from those of you who have gone through this.
As of now, my plan is to take a load to Texas, and take a day of two to get it registered there. Residence is not an issue with Texas, apparently.
    Thanks Guys!

    Register it in Ok.
When I bought my trailer, I bought it through a dealer in Houston.
Trailer was sitting at the plant in Sd.
They got me my plates through a tag office in Ok.
Cheap tags. 60.00 bucks 4 years ago, plus title fees.
    I live in Ga.

So that's why most the megacarriers have OK plates on their trailers.

That's one of the reasons, also some are going to In. plates as well. Same deal

Landstar has a person that will get you an IL title and tag for under 200 and no sales tax. It wasn't hard at all. I have also used MBI trailers in ME at about $150 for a five year plate, no sales tax. The trailer will be titled in those states, so FL can't do anything. Once you own the trailer for 6 months, you could get a FL title on it without paying tax as well, but there would be zero benefit to that unless you chose the IL deal and left LS, as it's LS's tag.

Sorry, I guess I should have given an update, but I was pretty busy. I did end up registering with Landstar. I ended up saving over $900 on sales tax I didn't have to pay, and it was really easy. They had it done in less than 2 days, and I was faxed my temp tag for it. I picked up the trailer last week. Thanks again for everyone's advice.

hi, i'm planing on getting my trailer plates from OK as well, just wanted to know , do i have to renew it every year or can i get per say (4-5 year tag).

Is Maine cheaper or Ok cheaper for registration on a trailer. And do you know any registration service that i can use to register in OK, i'm in california and just bought a trailer and don't want to pay sales tax here and would like to register in OK or Maine.
I bought 2004 trailer and planing on keep it for about latest 5 years.
