Here is a little background on myself. I'm a 45 year old male residing in southwest Arkansas, about 45 miles from Texarkana. I will be attending 4 week(160 hr.)CDL training course at the local college(CCCUA) at the end of August. I've already gotten my physical, and urinalysis out of the way. My paperwork has been turned in to the school, and I'm just waiting for class to begin.
This brings me to the ultimate reason for my post. I have no criminal record, and just 1 ticket from a little over a year ago(speeding). The real issue I expect to be dealing with though, is that I have been on the disability(SSDI) rolls for about ten years. And apparently this is considered the same as being unemployed, at least that's what I was told by the Maverick recruiter.
So...this brings me to the question, "who'll hire someone who's been unemployed for ten years?" I'm figuring the list will be rather short, thus being picky is not going to be an option. But surely there's at least a couple of companies out there I can maybe qualify for.......or am I just wasting my time?

You'll never know until you try, I dont think it's a waste of time either. Get the cdl school to help you send in applications to a bunch of companies and then pick the ones you want to work for.

The speeding tickets not going to help and depending on the disability your going to be limited on carriers who will entertain the idea of hiring you.

Trucking companies have to verify what you have been doing for the past 10 years. If you have been unemployed and can prove where you have been then unemployment is not a handicap. People sometimes take off to raise a family and re enter the work force later. You could have be born with a silver spoon and just want to work for fun. All sort of reasons to have a 10 year gap in your work record. If you can bring in a print out showing your SSI for the 10 year period do so.

i think you would have a problem anywhere getting a job. as long as you have a record of some sort of income for the past ten years you should be fine.

Did the maverick recruiter say they will not hire you? Because I know they take students straight out of schools. Point in fact I recently had a student who lives about ten miles North of Prescott Arkansas. Just curious.

Hi everyone, thanks for all the responses. Looks like I'll just have to contact a bunch of companies, and see who bites, and go from there. I've also been wondering if there may be some types of incentives(tax or otherwise) for the trucking companies, since it would be in the governments best interest to have me transition off of SSDI, if at all possible.

Trainer Dan, after doing some research, I'd decided that Maverick looked like the company that I'd like to work for. After calling them up earlier today, the lady began to ask me a series of questions, and everything seemed to be going fine until she asked me if I was working(or where I was working). Upon telling her that I had been on disability for about ten years, she informed me that my length of "unemployment" would be a problem and she could no longer assist me. After stating that I was unaware that being on disability was the same as being "unemployed", I thanked her for her time and hung up. She seemed like a very nice lady and was professional all the way. I only wish she'd told me everything I wanted to hear LOL.

Actually, it's not having a job that is the same as being unemployed.
