I only had my permit for a little over 30 days. I got my permit the end of may and had my paper license July 1st. I did while working full time I was able to adjust my work schedule so my mornings were free.Want2 Thanks this. -
@Want2...What are your plans after truck driving school (in terms of employment)?
-
Paluche, I want to go work in the oil fields. It's frustrating because I have been reading online that some companies there in TX will hire drivers with no experience, and then I read in other forums that companies will not. I just read that I should get my CDL in TX because many companies will want you to get a CDL in the state you are working in for insurance reasons. I honestly dont know what to do.

Want2...Start calling the "oil field" companies directly and cut all the non-sense found online, as you can see can be very confusing. They will answer your questions about experience and what license to hold. As I look, its a mix bag of no experience and 3 year + of experience.
Often times it is required to have some experience, especially when hauling tanker trailers; however, that is not always true. Therefore, if you must gain experience through one of the "mega carriers" like Schnieder National, then Dootson is not your choice.
If you think you can get a no experience job out there and just want your Class A license then any school should do, but be warned, per hour training can rack up some big $ really fast. Truck schools have those options because they know full well that everyone learns at a different pace and some will need many hours! And please...don't go to a school that only has 6-speed transmissions, that will not help you any when you hit the 10-speed trucks!!!!
Schnieder National does offer tanker positions after a bit of cross-country driving. That'll give you some good tanker experience and hopefully after a year of driving for them you can land something good in TX. -
Paluche, thank you so much for the info. I am looking at Roehl just for schooling and then I will apply at Schneider. It looks like they hire fresh grads. I am still doing my research and excited for some change.
-
Good...BTW, I heard Roehl is a very good option for employment thereafter! Either way...make sure you have your yearly goals in mind which will help you navigate through your first 12 months. Wish you the best of luck!

Try CRST... They're ok to start with. The commitment is only 8 months
