Hi from GA. I love driving and have hauled horses all my life and cars (two car trailer) to Manheim Auto Auction in PA. Then moved to GA. They wanted me to go in a big truck back then but the timing wasn't right. Looking to start a new career... Any other women truckers out there? Not sure on the best way to get started. Should I go to training and pay for it myself and hope I impress someone watching? Where should I get my training done - anyone know the best place in GA to get my CDL training? I have lots of questions, lol. Any advise is greatly appreciated!

Welcome. This is of course my opinion only but...
You should go through training at a school and pay for it yourself. Actually, let the government pay for it. Pell grants and other federal monies are available for truck driving schools. That way you do not have to be beholding to a company. Also the company is collecting money from the feds for hiring you anyway.
There are many women out there in trucking. They will be happy to give you advice because like all women they just cant seem to shut up.
http://www.dds.ga.gov/commercial/cdlschoollist.aspx This is a list of schools in Georgia.
Go to one that gives you college credit.
And dont think you have to only seek out women to ask for advice. I know for a fact that all the Swiftee drivers wear womens clothing so they can give you fashion tips. -
My husband and I are looking to team drive. never thought I would see the day I would agree to do this but now that I have im really excited!

If backing is not a major difficulty for you, I'm inclined to say ask around about schools near you and make sure there are no major issues with them, and go with the one who's most convenient and cost-effective for you. Schools really can't teach much about the "real world". You'll learn more in your first month out in the real-world than you would in 12 months of CDL school.
There are more and more women out here every year, but women are still disrespected by a small handful of the male drivers out here, regardless of their real skill level. Best wishes to you whatever you decide. A woman knows what some men are like, and they're no different out here. -
just my .02 find a college course they are longer and more in depth then most
and a lot of times they have grant money to help with tuition and smaller class size
some schools like i went to only teach you to pass the test for dmv
most companies want to see 120-160 hours from an accredited school for insurance purposes
ok that is maybe .05 of info -
Thanks guys, I appreciate the good advise
I expect to encounter some disrespect and negative feedback at some point. Can you tell me if it's possible to do this in more of a part-time capacity (after training and some time under my belt, of course)? Or is it expected of you to run, run, run?

I take that as a no... LOL
