i see in some of the threads that some of you are using copilot or some other software on your tablets.
i'd like to know what tablets you guys are using. cuz the brands i'm looking at don't have gps chips built in.

ok. i've found a list on bestbuy websight.

you can also use an external GPS receiver. I use an iPad w/o gps and cell service, and have a bluetooth GPS receiver. The external receiver adds about $100, but it was less than the $140 to add the internal GPS. Heads up, the new copilot still has some bugs, and they tend to bite at the worst times.

i've got the new co on my android phone. haven't used it much but seems to be ok.
it's for my aunt. so it has to be a built in chip. she isn't going to want to spend the extra money for a bluetooth device. or have to worry about charging it. and it'll more then likely get lost as they won't be using it much.
not to mention. she's in her 60's and not tech savy. trying to keep the device paired would be beyond her comprehension. so it needs to be as user friendly as possible. LOL. -
Just make sure you're using "installed software" maps as opposed to relying on web data to retrieve current map data. This will eat up your cellular data plan VERY quickly. I don't like the idea of having to look very far away from the windshield area to view a screen and as such I can't see using anything other than a dedicated GPS navigation device for navigating (windshield or dash mounted) -Trip Planning- is a different story and obviously you don't need to GPS puck for that.

Texan, I keep my iPad mounted on the dash, just above the hvac controls. Ram mounts makes ways to mount the thing anywhere. It's nice to have a 10" screen because I can see what I need at a quick glance.

like i said, they're not tech savy. they have no clue how to or even have a phone for tethering.

today i went shopping with my aunt for a android tablet. one that has gps.
we stopped at best buy. and got told that no such thing exists. i says articles are all over
the internet that such a thing does exist. got told that best buy don't sell such an item.
i say i can go home and order from the internet and pick it up at this exact store.
was asked what my use would be. i says i want gps. he says won't happen without internet.
i says my phone has the program. it works without internet. he says no such thing exists. i
said it's right here on my phone. he says your 4g is lit up. i says my 4 g is ALWAYS lit up. he says it's working off your 4g signal. i said THERE'S NO CELL COVER IN THE STICKS. he says he went to college and has a 3 year degree. it's not possible. i said i'm a traveling man and that 50 percent of this country has no cell. signal. you need to go back to school. i'm not the only
traveling man that is doing what you say CAN'T BE DONE.
and we got kicked out.
so we went back home. order the thing that doesn't exist. from another best buy.
picked it up. came home and installed the program that doesn't exist. went traveling
around the valley using the newly installed program WITHOUT internet. becuase this
thing HAS NO INTERNET CHIP built in.
WE BOUGHT WHAT DOESN'T EXIST. AND DID WHAT CAN'T BE DONE.
according to best buy. -
You must be a god among men. Seriously, how the hell does he think a garmin works?

I have a Samsung Galaxy Nexus 7inch tablet wi .fi only. It has g.ps and everything else my phone has . Takes awesome pictures and videos too. I have a suction cup mount for the windshield and all of it is cheaper than a rand manually ps.
