hi , Please bare with me I'm local driver for last 3 years and a lot of my loads where out of the way of weigh stations and only been to scales few times and never was pulled in. Now I just took on new job OTR and going to Atlanta,Ga from California.

I'm just curious about exactly what happens if you get the red light and have to pull into the weigh station. I know they can ask for your logbook, medical card and CDL. and insurance.

The company is real small with 2 trucks and provided me a truck which has
-Cab Card, Ifta licesnse and Insurance document that's it .

What about any other documents that are required for OTR trucking ? I have some questions on the below documents that I heard that i need ?

registration ? is that same as CAB-CARD which i have or do i need some other paperwork like IRP documents ?

what is "permit book " which permits go in there ? I'm going from Calfornia to Atlanta,GA and back.

I asked them for NewMexico Permit , they said they don't have any hard copy but they are registered and told me some kind of number ? Is that right ?, or do i need some kind of hard copy documentation for that ? ..

Which IfTA document to keep it the cab ? Do i need it ?

-And Please tell me if there is any other document that is required to keep in the cab so i can ask the owner to provide me before i pickup load next week.

    Thanks Alot :)

Wow! Sounds like your company needs to get on top of this... I drive 48 states and have 12 pages of permits and such. Granted a lot of that is HAZMAT and alcohol related. But Cab Card, IFTA, Weight and Tax Indentifier, and some various permits for the states you'll be transiting seems like the minimum (I have Wyoming), plus the CARB emissions certificate...

Good luck! And don't be caught without whatever you need!!

Wyoming is only for intrastate (unless it's a hazmat one for them too).

Since you're not intrastate, you don't need anything. New Mexico doesn't require you to keep a paper in your truck (neither does KY or NY). It's not a permit, per se. It's for being overweight in the state for tax purposes. Your VIN is all they'd need if they pulled you in to know whether you're compliant. You need a cab card (i.e., registration), IFTA (you need this as there's no way they're able to not use IFTA), and you need your insurance card. You also need to make sure the trailer has the registration in it, as well. Now, if you're hauling alcohol or hazmat, there's a lot more that states may want.

I would really question them if they don't have an IFTA permit in the truck (make sure they've got IFTA stickers on the truck and they're for the permit in the truck.

A 'permit book' is just a nice binder to store all the permits in. If you don't haul hazmat or alcohol, your book will be pretty thin.

    Spokester Thanks this.

If the company can't supply or doesn't know, you get ticketed, DEMAND to take it to court if you have to pay. Get a good lawyer to.

The states you're licensed for will be on your registration card. You'll need a current IFTA sticker and a copy of the IFTA license. You need current insurance paperwork. If the states aren't on your registration, you can buy a temporary at port of entry. You'll need hazmat and alchohol permits for each state if you're hauling that. Good Luck!

I was just worried about New Mexico Permit but you clarified that i don't need hard copy if the company is registered.
