What is up with the shuttle service from yard to hotel or vice versa. Been waiting for 1&1/2 hours for a shuttle to pick us all up. They only hold 14 people and there are 30 plus waiting

There are two kinds of people that are waiting for the shuttle... the quick and those that wait.
The shuttle is actually scheduled, believe it or not.
I assume you're talking about the afternoon/evening shuttles.
One leaves the hotel to come pick up at Stevens at 1700 sunday thru friday. The next shuttle on monday, tuesday is 2100. The assumption is most have to be at Stevens for the hill stuff. Sometimes they'll run a second shuttle after the 1700, and that's dependent on traffic.
Tonight, traffic was horrendous. It took me one hour to crawl from US80 on 635 to the Broadway-Beltline exit from I-30. (That's where the hotel is). I haven't been around here long enough to know the shortcuts. I normally go another way, but had to stop and pick up some drugs from Walgreens there by America's best.
So tonight may have been delayed by traffic.

Ugh! Took me since Thursday last to read this entire thread! But that's not a complaint, as Thursday last was a good/bad day for me. Set for testing at my school, I blew em away on PTI, passed Skills (only took 3/11 points so not bad) and then one bonehead moment and I auto-failed on Road test. (D/S 6th-5th and forgot the splitter--NEVER did that before)
Had my pity party on the way home and came home to an email Pre-Hire from Stevens!
Had my phone interview that same afternoon and, as of today, thanks in large part to this thread, I respectfully turned down a couple other pre-hires and, assuming I don't blow it again on my Road retest this Thursday, I will be headed to Mesquite on the Big Dog on the 17th!
I wanted to read this whole thread, despite the fact that a lot of the info is outdated, because I've learned so much along the way. However, being a noob, I still have questions:
What is OS&D? DLD?
As a noob, company driver, are you required to Transflow after each load, or can you just do it once a week? (seems that would be easier)
When assigned to a trainer, is it just grab & go or do you get a little face time/get acquainted time, to possibly avoid a bad match? (I can usually tell if someone and I "click" fairly quickly)
Our school only has Eaton-Fuller straight 10s...How hard is it to transition to 8sp.?
As I said before, I've read everything here, the good and the bad, and my perspective is, as so many have said, that Stevens is a "training" company (the very first thing that attracted me to them, was their training model, but I didn't know about D&D back then) and I'm planning to use them in just that manner. Will I find it a place I'm willing to stay beyond the first or second year? I'll let you know in a couple years! I have not gone into this with blinders on, or stars in my eyes, and I appreciate everything everyone has said about attitude playing such an important part, as if confirms what I already believed.
I also love all the road stories and especially, as of late, the "behind the glass' stuff from Emul!
If anyone is a trainer (smoker, and I don't mean OP) and will be on the yard, or nearabouts around 8/22-8/23 give me a shout! -
dld is deadline for delivery basically meat must be on truck and rolling otherwise stevens pays for it some how
osd is overages shortages and damaged pretty much who you call for load rejection at reciever.
my trainer met me and we rolled 10 minutes later

i transflow after each load so i get a paycheck every few days. i hate being behind a driver who has like 5 orders to send at once in line at the machine.

Not to nit pick, but I was told DLD is deadline departure... meaning the drop dead time a load has to leave a ahipper for a solo driver to make an on time delivery.

DLD: Deadline for Latest Departure.
This is mathmatically, the last minute a solo driver can depart from the shipper and deliver the load on time.
It gives you a guage to know when your load will be ready. Most loads are ready by the DLD time, but sometimes they're late.
Often they're early.
Just a guage.
OS&D: Overs, Shortages & Damaged. This is the department and terminology that handles any goods not accepted by the receiver.
Often their reason for rejecting is bogus...such as produce. A buyer places an order for produce on monday or tuesday for delivery a week later. The need is anticipated sales over that week. The shipper sends it out later in the week and we deliver it usually on mondays or tuesdays. So if they didn't sell enough grapes over the week and weekend? They'll find a reason to reject the load. (bruised, old, whatever). Then the OS&D dept will find a secondary buyer for us to take it to and deliver. Usually within a few hours.
Learning an 8 speed over a 10 is not hard. You'll probably grind a few gears, but who of us hasn't?!
Normally, you will meet your trainer and head straight out. If you meet on the yard, you may be lucky and have a cup of coffee to start. Many times you might be sent to the trainer in another city. It is not uncommon for trainers to drop a student in a city (to go back to Dallas) and pick up a new one in the same city.
Good luck on your test. You'll do fine. Sounds like you have a great attitude and will do well.
