I've been following this thread for a bit, and these guys are not kidding when they tell you of their experiences with certain companies. Specifically the companies that offer a lease and freight to haul while you're paying for their truck. There's a reason drivers have horror stories, or "Tall Tales" as you describe them.
I've been trucking in one form or another for 16 years, and with the exception of tankers, I've pulled everything from a car hauler, dryvan, lowboy equipment trailer to a reefer. The easiest is a dryvan. The hardest is a carhauler. The only reason I've never pulled a straight flatbed is that I don't like the idea of "Giftwrapping" freight. I must say that I do like freight that drives on and off the trailer...chains and straps don't bother me, it's tarps that I can't stand.
I've been in every state in the lower 48 with the exception of North Dakota, and I don't think I've missed much by not going there. I've driven in all types of weather, and all kinds of terrain. I've been running local and regional for the past 9 years...in other words, I've driven in ice and snow, but I haven't been north or west of Farmington, NM or east of Atlanta, Ga.
Even though I have all weather/all terrain driving experience, It's outdated, and I'm rusty where my skills are concerned...when it comes to the ice and snow stuff.
I wouldn't even consider going back OTR in the winter months...unless I could STAY in the south and there's just no guarantees in the freight business.
Get a couple of more months under your belt in the seat, and come springtime...make whatever move you're going to make. It's your decision anyway and it looks like you've already made up your mind.
If it works, then you can say you did the right thing, but you've been warned of the pitfalls.
