If you want to pay for school yourself, you can take a refresher course with SAGE or any of the other trucking schools. Or if you'd prefer not to pay out of pocket, you can go with a company like Swift and if you stay with them for a year or longer, your schooling is free. In our state, C1 offers the refresher for $1,000 and Sage wanted $2300 (per person). If you want to go with a smaller carrier, you'll need to pay for your own schooling. If you prefer larger carriers, there's several that offer the training. Good tip - pick your company first, then ask them what schools they prefer. That way you're not paying for a school that your desired company refuses to recognize.
I've heard rumor that 2010 created a lot of new rules - hubby and I start school again on Monday so we'll have more scoop to add in then.
Do your research before choosing a company if you want to get your schooling through them - make sure you keep in mind what's important to you and use that criteria to evaluate your new company. I prefer large companies because of the nationwide resources they have available. Other people prefer smaller companies because they're known by name and face instead of being a number. Each person wants something different -- we don't care about home time, but for others home time is paramount. Most companies require experience within the last 3 years or you'll have to do a refresher. The plus side is not having to sweat over passing the CDL again!![]()
