There is so much good information on this site about the different trucking companys, but I can't find any about the companys around me. I posted a thred asking if any one knew about Monson Trucking based in Duluth MN, but have'nt heard anything yet.
I am starting at Monsons school in January, and the only info I have is the info that the company gave me, So here is what I have so far,
School is 5 weeks paid in full with one year contract
Start at .3225 CPM for 90 days than go to .3625 CPM
1 CPM per year increase for 5 years
Drivers average 2400-2500 MPW
Home weekly
98% Touch free freight
53' dry vans only with International Conventional tractors
Area of operation MN,WI,IA,IL,IN,KS,MI,MO,ND,SD
Holiday Pay 135.00 for each of the 8 paid holidays
Helth insurance is 100% paid by employer(that was a big one for me)
401K with .006 company match
Vacation 1 week/1year, 2 weeks/two years,three weeks/seven years,4 weeks/15 years,5 weeks/20 years
Average Driver Tenure is 5 years, and the company states the have a 40% turnover rate
Now keep in mind the above info is directly out of the hand out that the Monson recruter gave me at my interview. My question to you guys and gals is does this sound good or does this sound "to good to be true", or is it just about what I should be looking for in a tucking company?
Let me know your thoughts and again, if any one has any direct knowledge, or dealings with Monson tucking I would realy like to here of them. Thanks..........

This deal sounds okay, but it's not great. But know that 'great' to me may mean something else to others.
The turnover at that company is good, if that is really what it is.
401-K contribution seems a bit low?
You should check out this outfit's safety record online. There's a way to do that, but I don't remember the site address. Others have posted that address here.
The miles seem a bit low, but the EQ and the delivery area sounds fine. I'd just wonder if I were going to be going to Chicago a lot. You don't wanna go with an outfit that has you going there every other run, especially as a newbie.
I shy away from indentured-servitude training deals, but that's me.
One final thing--you'd better know how to chain up if you go with these guys.
I suspect you'll be seeing Chi-town a LOT, man. And I'm not talking 'just passing through on i-94' either. -
Iss-D is 34, other safety numbers look good too. Seems like a decent outfit to start with, maybe even worth staying there for two or more years.
I agree with TIP that I too don't like those deals where you're contractually obligated to them, but if it gets you your CDL for free, then it ain't so bad. -
How about home time?
-
They claim they get you home weekly, and they're probably telling the truth. Their territory is small enough to allow that, sure. For how long you'll be home? That's another matter. Maybe a day. Maybe an hour. I'd guess you'd get home once a week for 24 hours.
Make sure if you go with these guys you don't end up being their 'go-to' guy for Chicago runs. I remember at Swift, experienced drivers liked to sluff off the New York runs onto rookies. -
sounds little too good to be true.....i am sure their is a catch but hey good luck

Last I heard the drivers there were still Teamsters Local 346,Good Local Great BA's

Like i say I will be starting school in Jan, so I will be sure to keep you guys posted as to how that goes and how my time with the company goes as well, THANKS AGAIN FOR THE GREAT REPLIES!!

I worked for Monson for 18 months after attending their school. It could be 60 days before they send you to Chicago and when they send you to Thunder Bay, CA, you will go up with other drivers. I had no complaints working for Big "M" and would look to return after a refresher to get back behind the wheel. Had to leave driving due to auto accident injuries. Monson kept me busy, averaged 2700 miles. 1st year income was around 47. Listen to your dispatcher and you'll do fine. Instructor does a good job of weeding out the flakes and get you ready for your 1st solo.

My husband started for Monson out of Duluth in the fall, and right now is slow! for the month of january and part of December he has avg around 1000 miles per week. they'd send him out on tues or wed. and he'd get home sat afternoon. Besides that He missed the holiday pay because he was under his 90 days.
Also you may want to check into the insurance a little further before you decide, I just looked over the handbook and almost everything had a 500 deductable. In otherwords thats like not even having insurance in my opinion.
I am not sure if they just dont like him or what because he has talked to other drivers and some get 3000 mi per week and others get alot less than they promised.
Also, they have a three strikes your out style policy and he has already gotten two! he dented up his truck a couple times by bumping into something while backing into a very tight dock and I know he deserves it - but he is new to driving and it has been VERY slippery here, any compassion? Maybe this is normal for a company I dont know. But I can understand their side, they do hire drivers just out of school and you gotta motivate people to be careful. He is thinking that now might be a good time to make a job change before he gets a third strike and gets terminated. That would make it harder to get a new job.
