I can just imagine the winters up there but summer looks like paradise. I love those places where it seems like it's only you and God together at the edge of the universe. Also, I always wanted a job where I could be on the clock and sitting on my butt. Just once, I want try that just once! LOL

Possible, sure.
Likely to succeed? You'd likely get your ### handed to you by the industry that is already there and operating.
With absolutely no experience in a specific industry and then trying to break into a specialty market as well, that's like a truck driver buying a bunch of wood working tools and becoming a custom cabinet maker. -
Take it easy on the guy. One, he's not dumb. Two, he says he has a partner. I don't know how people do it who have a wide array of investments but some people can pull it off. Now, trucking in ND, I have no specific knowledge of that.
kirkdoc Thanks this. -
In response to kirkdoc: This is not practical or possible at this time. 2 years ago yes....now, no. This place is over run with trucks of every kind. Acres and acres of trucks parked that were working a few months ago. I don't deter people from coming out here to work but coming out here with a business is very risky. Especially now. And yes, you would have to start as an owner operator lease to a trucking company as an oil company would not hire someone with one truck. Or 10 for that matter.
kirkdoc, Wildflower, gdyupgal and 1 other person Thank this. -
Must see TV. Hilarious, total abuse of North Dakota. Permian Basin, anyone?

Thanks PureEvil and others! This is just the kind of down-to-earth advice I am looking for. I'm not ready to throw in the towel yet, but I will investigate these issues very carefully before moving forward. My instincts tell me this is not going to be a simple thing and its probably not worth it. I do have about 400k to invest, and was hoping to capitalize somehow on this oil boom happening so close to home. That's not enough to do much with. There are other options besides trucking and I plan on taking a trip over there and snooping around. Let me ask you this: are there any Owner/Operators of 1 or 2 trucks working and making money over there? Thanks again for taking the time to respond! And let me also mention that I would be willing to partner up with someone already entrenched in the industry over there and looking to go out on their own. As I said in my first comment, I realize I'm nieve and just asking questions. (as for the Refrigeration truck idea....sounds fun bu it's a long way from home!)

The current head football coach at the University of Arkansas has, or was about to, file for bankruptcy. Dude has made millions just from his coaching salaries. It wasn't enough, though, he had to invest in real estate.
I wonder what motivates people? 400k? I'd have ample quantities of guns, food and gold bullion. Seriously, do you ever listen to the Alex Jones radio show or look at infowars.com? The Federal Reserve ponzi scheme looks like it's coming down, and that pretty quickly. The Roaring 20's made way for The Great Depression. Your business but now more than ever, I'd be thinking about wealth that can endure a storm.
Not trying to throw the thread off track. -
I have had a lot of people tell me to take my truck to the oil fields.
I don't for:
Roads will beat the hell out of your trucks. I worked out in western ND hauling anhydrous into the rural nurse sites. We had an international that was always getting fixed from running those rural roads. And I didn't go beating on the truck either. Why would I want to do that with my equipment now?
Housing situation sucks. The locals got burned in the rush in the 90's, they aren't too keen on getting burned again now.
No one seems to be willing to share more than, come out and I can put you to work. Doing what? for how long? and for what pay? Don't provide those for me up front, I am not going to come skipping into the game anytime soon.
If they are so excited about what's happening, they'd be more forthcoming about what's available. -
If you want to capitalize on the oil boom there are a ton of options for that.... how about a fast food restaurant, or a decent truck stop with cheap home cooked style food. Perfect example its a 2 hour drive or 125 miles from Minot to Williston and there is basically no where to stop and get food, other then a gas station. Tioga is about 1/2 way on that drive and has a few small things but no real fast food and is a huge boom town.
Another option, get a group of carpenters together build some 1/2 way decent trailers with 1 or 2 bedrooms, bathroom, and small kitchen then lease or sell them to the oil companies. Housing is a huge issue, and if you can provide a good option for a decent price they will be interested for sure.
Or the biggest money maker of all but I doubt you would ever get it approved out here, open a strip club. If you opened a strip club anywhere near Williston you would be rich in no time, you have 10's of 1000's of men 1000's of miles from there wife or girlfriend and a pocket full of money. Its also the only business where your employees have to pay you to work there (encase you dont know how a strip club works, the women make tips and lap dance money but have to pay you a portion of it, normally like 50% to use your stage and facility). So all you need is a bouncer, ####tail waitress, and bar tender. Then you can charge a entry fee, force them to have there car valeted and charge for it, force a 2 drink min. at $8 per drink even for water, and hell some even server food.
Just some ideas for you to think about.....
Hope it helps,
PureEvil

I live in Nevada and was talking to an owner operator who had gone up there for a month with his belly dump trailers. He said the entire month he was only able to run three days. He's back here now.
gdyupgal Thanks this.
