Well at least you got all of your permits and stuff together. I had to do all that when I was in school and I think I got it all done at the last minute. I didn't do my hazmat though because of all the extra things I would have to go through like finger printing and I espically didn't have the extra $$$ for the fees.
But I actually just came back out from being home. I stayed out on the road 8 months before I went home and that was only because every 5 minutes my mom was assking was I ever coming home. I couldn't wait to get back out but I had been running hard and I was extremely tired so all I did was sleep, watch tv, and go through 3 bags of mail and packages and sleep some more. When I finally got a load I packed my stuff very quick because I was ready to get back moving. No important updates so far besides I finally bought a college fridge and have been saving tons of money not eating at the truck stops all the time and i've dropped some weight because of it!!!

This is what my wife and I plan on doing when i retire from the military. We have a plan in place right now. When I retire we will have my retirement pay and my disability pay each month. That will go into savings. If I average about 2,500 miles a week we can put an extra 1k in the bank each month. (I'll be the one driving she is from the Philippines and doesn't like to drive). We will live in the truck for 10 years. The way we look at it we will have saved about 300k in that 10 years and then fully retire in the Philippines. At least that is the plan for now.
I-80Trucker Thanks this. -
I would highly advise you try to talk her into going through school. You guys could really bank as a husband/wife team!

Chompi I would love for her to drive with me but the problem is she has never driven in her life. Not a car nothing. She still lives in the philippines right now. Working on the visa stuff it takes awhile. We meet when I was stationed in korea.
1-80Trucker: I will keep you posted but it will be another 2 years till I retire from the military. So basically this is time for me to plan and then re-plan then execute. I plan on going to a comunity college (letting the military pay for it) then going with a starter company for a year or so. Before i go to comunity college I'll make sure I graduate from it about a month before I retire. When I retire I can just go with a company and still get a paycheck from the military for a few months. That way during training the small pay check doesn't hurt only helps.
If you don't have experience with the military and are asking how can you stll get a paycheck. Well if you are smart when you are in the military you will save up your leave. I should have 2 months leave saved up before I retire. So that will be 2 months out of the military before I'm actually fully retired. I'll still have my retirement paperwork. Also you get house hunting and job hunting time so that adds up to about another month. So that will be 3 months of regular military pay before retirement pay kicks in.I-80Trucker Thanks this. -
Sounds like you have it all planned out and that is awesome , 3 months pay while you learn ,, nice nice.
Just wanted to thank you for all your hard work and service you have put in for OUR GREAT COUNTRY ! God Bless You !
I understand about your wife never driving a Vehicle ever , who knows maybe after your all set and been out there for a while she Might just want to play around with the truck and drive in empty parking lots ,, my Brothers wife did not get her lic, tell she was 33 yrs old and now 10 years later who would have ever guest she is driving a large school bus and a few times a year drives the huge buses you see on the freeway to the Grand Canyon from California , i still have to do a double take when she talks about it lol she is about 5''2 tall and was always so scared to drive a car ,., so you never know women are pretty tuff people ..Ralph4159 Thanks this. -
Ok ,, been in CDL School all month and am just about to take the Drive test in a few days , they say i am doing pretty good but i have yet to nail the ally Dock in one shot , i have to do a pull up to get it ,, other then that its all pretty good my straight line backing is really good my turns are good my shifts are ok ,, but i think it would be better in a newer truck these trucks are pretty loose ,, old internationals with 9 speeds .. i got my doubles triples and tanker Endorsements a few days ago and am waiting to take the Hazmat tell the last min ,,the School seams pretty good so far other then the fact that they happen to have a huge class this month so the drive time is not as much as it should be ,, there are 10 of us and 2 trucks ,, 2 instructors one truck stays in the yard all day and the other go's out on the road and we switch off as the truck comes back ,, so in 6 or 7 hours each of us get to drive the course about 4 or 5 times each day , it takes about 45 min to an hour for the cycle from first guy back to the first guy again ,,, we had 3 days of class room at the start of the month ,, learned all about air brakes , daily logs and hours of service ,, some laws to watch out for and other odds and ends ,,, we had a test in the yard to see who will go to take there test first and there were 3 guys that failed the test all together ,, kinda sad to see after they have been there as long as the rest of us and still not able to drive the trucks or ally dock or any other maneuver's ,,, ok i wanted to give an update in case anyone was wondering where i have been or what was going on i will keep everyone posted as to my drive test lol wish me luck im going to need it i feel like a 16 yr old kid again going for my first drive test ,, hope everyone is doing well i will update soon .
CertifiedSweetie and gdyupgal Thank this. -
Wow! I'm sorry, but I just posted exactly the same question! I am doing exactly what you are doing. I don't want to mess with rent while on the road. I'd rather save that money to do other things. I figure that I will be at home maybe 6-8 days a week or less, and I have friends I can visit in several cities along my route.
I have not started doing it yet, but I will be starting this winter.
The websites that have been most instructive are the ones that deal with people who live full time in RVs.
PM me and we can share information that we find, Okay?I-80Trucker Thanks this.
