One second of doing a mirror check can mean the difference between stopping safely and ramming the vehicles in front of him, as he did in the video. What it looks (and sounded like) to me, was that he was jaking down the small hill and upon reaching the bottom, got back on the throttle to make the next hill without slowing down too much, then traffic SUDDENLY stopped in front if him. If he was doing a mirror check at this same time, it's plausible that he wouldn't have the time to stop. Not saying he's not at fault, but there are a lot of circumstances that aren't known by simply watching the video.
Good driving, or bad choices?

He was probably texting,on the phone, not putting attention (racing).
-
that dash cam isn't always such a good idea.........
-
wow i wouldnt have wanted to be sitting in that altima when that hit wowsers he was going to fast, thats for sure
-
I think the dump truck saw ahead before the OD driver. As the dump slowed he essentially passed on the right. The resolution on the dashcam isn't that sharp, hard to tell about brake lights. There aren't any skid marks or cars askew from the four wheelers that were stopped.
Suppose it could happen to any of us. And I am only armchair quarterbacking. -
Just looks to me that he simply misjudged what his stopping distance would be. He fell into the common trap that we have all been guilty of, which is we don't expect interstate traffic to come to a grinding halt and would have plenty of time to react if it did.
-
I felt sorry for the trucker, he was saying something I wouls say in a situation like this. It definitely took him by suprise- no air or city horn used or engine brake. I would sue people for slowing down to less than 45 mph on a clear dry road just because of a jumping tire, unfortunately the same drivers would never warn you with flashers about the grave danger they chose to put everybody around them in.
-
It's not just a jumping tire. That is a wheel and tire assembly and at the end of the video you see a brake drum. Heavy dangerous stuff to be flying around at freeway speeds. My first reaction would be to stop to avoid something like that coming through my windshield too. Hard to look in your mirror to see what's coming up behind you when you are concentrating on a for sure danger to your front.

Was going downhill in the rain towards a traffic light once. The light turned green and the right lane( I was in the left) looked vacant so I did not slow down that much.Unfortunately the last 2 cars were not paying attention and I realized a little too late that there was a car in my blind spot and I could not change lane to the right.
I was hydroplanning for a good quarter of a mile and 3 cars in the left turning lane and the guy behind the car that kept standing at a green had actually move up 2 feet for me not to wedge in between them
Botttom line:
1. Unless you are a psychopath it is natural to avoid a direct rear end impact, property damage should not come to mind first
2. Cant get petrified in a situation like this-engine brake, horn, swearing, flashers, brake sqealing, everything will come in handy.
I am the rude guy btw if someone does not pay attention at the green light from now on. -
My first reaction would be to turn on flashers and look at a rearview mirror
