I work for a local company. Ive talked on the forums before about how its not the most up and up company. Well its looking my time is limited. Things didn't end to well when I refused to take a trailer out the yard that was 10,000 gross over. I've been looking for a different job. Most companies at this point want me to take a refresher course since I don't have any otr experiance. Swift on the other hand tells me that as long as I can pass a road test, no refresher course is needed. Seems a little odd since every other company i've talked to wants me to go back to get retrained. Dont want to bite the bullet quit my current job just to get send home.

Two companies showed any intrested swift and crst. Neither one of them has a great following. I figure I have to pay my dues somewhere. Crst was ready to send me out for a company paided refresher. All I had to do is sign a 9 month contract locking me in at .22 cpm. On top of that I don't know too many people I could tolerate living in the same tiny cell as me without wanting to strangle the life out of them. I hear bad things about Swift also. Just want to make sure im not going from a bad situation to a worse situation.

I didn't drive trucks for almost 3 years,,, and all wanted me to take a refresher course except Swift..I only had to go out with a trainer for 1 week before they put me in my own truck...With them it's either 1 to 2 weeks,,, or 6 weeks,, NO in between...or at least it was like that, not for sure now....But Swift isn't too bad at all,, always had a preplan ready..I see where a lot of people say they only made 25cpm,, but I got 32cpm up to 40cpm depending on length of haul...I didn't like all the ragged trailers though,,, And I mean they have a lot of em....or they did..

Okay, Starting with the "i figure i have to pay my dues somewhere" you have the basic idea... good.
People post stuff about a company when they are mad, and not so much when they are content. i'd pass on the 22 cent per mile if it was for 9 months, unless it's either that or dropping the chulpa, at Taco Bell.
What kind of deal did Swift offer ? no refresher or trainer ? Better than 22, i hope

I would say SWIFT over CRST because tho you will be getting 0.22 CPM with CRST TEAM DRIVING your miles are SPLIT. With SWIFT if you pass that road test you get ya own truck and ya on ya marry way or if you fail you get sent out with a Mentor for a few weeks then you go back and road test again.

cuzzin it and nicholas_jordan Thank this.

Swift starts me out at 25 Cpm raises at 3 6 9 and one year. Not great but its better then 22. Since I have zero otr exp I would have to do the two to six week mentor. I'm not against further traininf. It can't hurt right

Good luck. Hope it all works out. I started OTR back in '04 with CRST. Pay is not very good in the beginning but at least with CRST you don't have to spend that much time w/ ur co-driver cuz usually one sleeps and the other drives. Worked for them 6 months (back then it was what u had to work for them to pay off the school) and quit. Then....went local for 7-1/2 years. After awhile the local stuff got on my nerves so I decided to go back to OTR. Found a great company where I live who took me on road test and passed me w/flying colors. President of the company gave me approval to go back OTR without all the mumbo-jumbo refresher stuff. Set up my truck today and leaving out on Sun. morning w/pick up in Kentucky and then on to Houston. People do give you chances; you just got to find the right company for you. and LOL I am gonna scream on Sunday cuz I am picking up heavy rolls of paper and I haven't crossed a scale in 8-1/2 years. I will prolly screw the first one up and get called in the back. WISHING YOU THE BEST OF LUCK AND HOPE YOU ENJOY WHERE U END UP. Swift does sound like a better choice than CRST tho. ..........See ya out on the road....Be safe

Thank you. I'm acutally pretty excited to go otr. Driving local was great for a while, but once you have seen every account 50 times that we service it gets old. This time of year we use helpers. By helpers I mean they help by blocking my mirrors when making a tight turn :). Ive always wanted to go otr, but the wifey and I made an agrement that I would wait for the kid to start school. It will be nice to do a pre trip, and have the stuff thats broken fixed. Not proud to say it but I've been forced to drive some pretty bad stuff. One of the trailers I use on a normal basis is older then me. Ive had everything imaginal break. I'm not excepting to get rich off trucking ever. I tell you it gets in your blood after a while. I appriciate the good words. Ill try my best to keep you guys updated on my swift travels.

I definitely understand the stuff getting broken not getting fix. Used the same same same miserable 2 trailers for 5 years. One was a 1986 old Frue that the sides bulged; the floor fell through, the roof leaked and all you had to do to stop the trailer was take your foot off the throttle. It would stop then and there in the middle of the street. Backing into dock it would stop dead halfway in and get stuck. The other trailer kept blowing clearance lights like they were firecrackers. Right b4 I left there was one out for over 3 months and my old company has a whole drawer full of them. Drove around on 6 bald tires on the trailer for 8 months til I finally refused to take it out on Road Check this year and then had to threaten him that i would take the trailer over the scales if he didn't fix them. That finally got me new tires the next day. YAY. My new company has beautiful new reefer trailers and really nice trucks. Good luck with Swift. Do you have an orientation date yet?
