I suppose it is time to finally give in and get a GPS. Realizing that a map is the best directional device, I need information on which GPS is the best for the least money, with continual map updates? I kind of like the Garmin brand, provided it fits my needs. Got the wife a garmin for the family car, and like the voice activated street name/number advance notice. Other then that I am completely uninformed when it comes to a GPS.:Ship:

i use a Tom-Tom. i also have the rand mcnally with me as well. there is no reason for me to pay 300 bucks for a gps when the truck route map is the same thing. people have just gotten lazy and want a computer or smart phone to do the reading for them.

i use the one i have mainly for reminding me of turns needed on the freeway and for locating street names at night. that is nice when its foggy and raining and your trying to creep along while looking for a street at night.

This sight is useful for comparing gps units. I also bought mine from them. I bought a refurbished Rand McNally 500 with free map upgrades and it works fine and saved me a bunch. Several sights on the net with these such as Newegg or tigerdirect.
Stay away from tomtom. They are getting out of the gps market.
Also, if after comparing units you find one you like then trying the factory sight may save you money. http://store.randmcnally.com/trucking/gps-navigation/gps-units.html is a good example.

btw: I couple the gps with mapquest on my Android and google earth plus an actual truckers atlas. CAUTION: even the best gps can be wrong so use common sense. If the gps tells you to take a left turn as that is the shortest route and you look left and there is a sub-division there don't just say "well, ok"....
I also got the 5 inch screen. I've seen the bigger ones but havn't seen the need for a 7/9in. 5 seems big enough.

pcmiler is the cheapest. i use truckmiles.com and pcmiler is always the same. rand never agreed.

you can also get the software for your phone for free.

as for the atlas. it's mapping is limited. has no functions other then a state picture. and has been outdated by gps.

it's a secondary tool that every truck should have for backup.

given the fact that i only speak english. and so does my gps. it's the best thing since the atlas.

    nicholas_jordan Thanks this.

https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?pID=112211 I am waiting for this Garmin 7 inch screen GPS due to be released in the fourth quarter 2012. I really want to use a tablet and have truckers GPS software on it, the problem is the software has bad reviews, it depends on the network.

the software doesn't require a network. if your talking about the tablet.

and yes it has glitches. why they can't seem to be worked out is beyond me. works on my phone but for whatever reason the mapping portion disables the voice. my aunt has the tablet and it's not very functional at all. we're both running the same android os version.

I started with Garmin. I got a 750 from walmart. I still use it because back then the company included a FM transmitter that allows me to load all my music on a card and play it on my radio. Then I added a 465t. I love it but still have the 750 for music. I also have a laptop and I am thinking about adding a gps receiver to it.

I want a cheap receiver for the laptop as the logging program I bought uses it. I am thinking about the diesel boss combination of PC Miller software with the receiver. That seems to be the best if you already have a laptop.

Of course with the latest Qualcomm, GPS seems to be less needed.

You asked for Cheapest. I would like the best value and a laptop with PC Miller and a receiver would seem to have the best value as for 600 or so you can have something that will do everything and be up-gradable
