In short hell no. It is a good starting off point running hot shot and ltl. It will allow you to build your client base to a point but when you switch over to a tractor with full load your expenses are going to go up exponentionally. You can make good money with short loads but you make that much more the more you carry as well as your expenses.

You know somebody earlier asked if he could make money hauling containers. people always asking can I make money doing this or that. The short answer is yes you can make money doing about anything if you get the right deal. I mean guys like Eric Clapton make millions of dollars playing guitar for pete's sake !
So how would you answer it if someone asked you, "Can I make money playing guitar ?" ?!
I know that sounds like I'm smarting off, but I doubt someone on here is going to say oh yah, I have a dually and 40 footer, do this, this, and this and you'll make $100,000/yr. That's just not how business works. -
I wouldn't buy a new dually for sure . Older ones are more reliable . A dually can make good money doing true hotshot with the right customer base but those opportunities are rare.

This is something I have never understood, a guy has no problem buying a NEW dually for 50 grand and liteweight trailer for another 20 grand, but he thinks a nice used semi and trailer is too much at 45,000 for everything.

lol so true -
And the loaded dualie will get little to no better fuel milage!

Few people pay cash for a new dually . They finance it for 5 years and it's an upside down loan from the time they drive it off the lot . What's a 3 year old dually with 450,000 miles on it worth ?

6000 lb times what ever strap steel is per lb at time? And probably had to rebuild engineand trans at least once each!
