    Hello,
My question is why do you choose chains or straps to secure a load.

    Thanks.

Some shippers require u use straps . Some products can bee damaged with chain use . I only use straps when needed , I like my chains

A good rule of thumb is if the product is metal use chains. Except if the chains rubbing on the product will damage it.

Petty good rule. Straps have to constantly be re-tightened though also. I've used straps on coated pipe and steel plate, just used buffers to protect from marring the product. Depends on the customer too. Me personally, I run a combo and use both, sometimes at the same time!

One more thing, I wouldn't use straps on belts or spools- strictly chains! Safety Issues like HCG and such.

    ...duh...
No trying to be a %$#hole, but can a chain safely been thrown over the top of a 13 foot load? Nope, then you have that chains will damage most stuff. As posted above.

Any steel I haul gets straps and chains, anything other just gets straps.

My rule is that I use chains whenever the load allows it.

This is a rather open ended question. What type of loads? Would you use chains on tar babies or sheet rock? How about straps on metal coils as front and rear tie downs? It all depends on the load.
