Split Sleeper break

in general responsiveness + alertness are served by shorter sleep times drive a few hours / nap one hour if you can or fit to what can be done but it is proven shorter = better responsiveness though I like the really extended pattern

 

I am needing to study HOS but 5/8/5/2/5 is obviously determined by someone who has been in a cab ~ I hope to get on running fracwater vacuum tanker - HOS is different there / the schedule you cite is very acceptable for alertness / observation / responsiveness

 

Honestly man you are better off taking your full 10 instead of splitting it as a newbie.. and you can't say that people are more alert on shorter rest periods.. While I agree there are several studies out that give different results.. Splitting is easy.. I think you gain 2 to 3 hours of driving a day Whatever you do don't kill yourself for that load in that trailer no load is worth a childs life or anyones life for that matter

 

I was always told its easy to screw up a split so don't do it.
Never used it until I got on Elogs, still only used it a couple times.

 

probably what World of Transportation is saying is commonly done and widely approved but fact of matter is industrial engineering shows about 5 hours doing something and need to do something else ~ I do not know where the studies are so if WoT can assist I would like to glance at a few of them - I have for most of my life been a 10-12 hours with meal breaks & HOS says 11 but of recent I have been sitting in an office for (too long time) and I have found that after 4+ hours we need a break ....

 

I plan so I don't have to do it.

It's just too confusing for my old brain.

 

Before we went to the new hours of service I would take a break about every 5 hours to eat then I would drive 3 more and sleep until I got ready to go normally 4 or 5 hours.. Now with the new hours of service we have.. When I start I drive 11 hours without a break unless I have a delivery to make.. and yes I agree we need the ability to take breaks but the hos rules don't allow for safety they allow parents against tired truckers to claim a victory in rule book and the courts.. While people are driving more than ever while they are tired... I will look for those studies, but I would also suggest you starting getting landline magazine, overdrive, and read the Trucker newsletter.. All have good and bad info but they all will inform you of what is going on in this industry..

You should read your HOS too.. it is 14 hours on duty not 11.. 11 driving 14 on before you have to have a 10 hour break to drive, but you can split it all you want to but be mindful of it the law is not real easy to keep track of and mistakes will happen unless your company has elogs then heck it does it all for you..
