Attention employers: We now require a valid DOT# for anyone wishing to post a driving position. If your job offer doesn't contain a DOT number, it will not get past moderation and will not appear in the forum. The other requirements in the sticky at the top of this section are still required as well. Thank you for understanding.

well companies like mine in the freight biz have distinct seasons... our busy season has ended and the less senior guys are getting laid off...
then when freight picks up in april they get called back...
when I had my own truck - and ran produce there was no slow season...
some parts of trucking are meters of the economy too... if goods and products are not being bought then they are not being produced THUS no need to transport anything THUS slower trucking...
hauling food or base commodity stays pretty constant - because we all have to eat on a regular right? -
" hauling food or base commodity stays pretty constant - because we all have to eat on a regular right?"
That is what I thought when I was laid off automotive at Thanksgiving, 1974. I then leased to a refrigerated outfit. It turns out that everyone else had the same idea. There were too many trucks hauling groceries. There was no incentive to raise the rates. There were long layovers and deadheads. Pulling a reefer is not a way to survive a recession. I would have been better off drawing unemployment. -
LOL A reefer company was the first to call me after sending my app out online... I kid you not it was less then a minute after clicking the mouse they was calling...... Scares me though a company watching that close, makes me wounder why so desperate? do they treat their drivers bad or something?
The company that just closed had and pretty much always had a waiting list to get onto... -
I would try Walmart or Frito lay. Both have excellent pay and benefits. If your an ltl guy check on Jevic or New Century. These companies all have excellent oppurtunities as do the union ltl's. Take a deep breath and move on. Just try and make an informed decision and compare all the aspects of a job before "jumping" into something you may regret.
-
I hear you there....
Like i said before it is very hard to find a "good" company that actually does respect drivers and not just claim they do.. (they all claim it lol)..
Not jumping into anything at this moment but I am one who just can't sit around.... It kills me to just be sitting here not working.... Ah heck perhaps I will find something to do for right now then get back into trucking later who knows....
I really would like to find a coast to coast outfit that pays well. (.40 per mile or more) -
dunno where you live in indiana - but hailing from the richmond area myself I know a lot of truckload companies around there that pay fairly well...
are you opposed to local work?
I know my company in chicago hts. is hiring teams (west coast boomerangs - home friday night through sunday night) ((northern indiana area))
Indy is not hiring - (and it is a hog board - takes a few years to get up to speed) ((central indiana area))
ABF in dayton will be hiring soon ... ((eastern indiana area))
and we will be hiring like mad in cincinnati next spring and summer. (( we have a lot of guys that live south of richmond - east of indy)) -
Tell you what we just put on your DAC abandon/stolen truck. That's the end of your career. Read the post again .... bring the truck home. If they are closing and your holding onto a lease truck the lease company is coming after you but not until they ruin you career.
Hopefully this company is worth their salt and he'll see a last paycheck. -
look up cowan systems the company is based in baltimore but they run out of indy and where i am from in Portland IN
-
I am not apposed to doing doing anything.... It does not really matter where I go, Heck New york, LA Chicago its all the same to me... Long as I am paid well send me anywhere, even if it is only local I don't care... And I live in Lebanon, IN just north on I65 of Indy about 25 miles......
Although I do find it more enjoyable to do the coast to coast runs....
I have been hitting it pretty hard the past few days looking for a job and to be honest I have not really liked what has been offered to me... A bunch of .32,.35,.37 and low pay for the extras such as detention, layover ext....
Makes me even miss my old job even more....
I have 2 potentials that seem to be pretty decent but the companies are really hard to get on and I barley meet the min... 5 yrs exp ext.... to be honest I doubt I will get on at either one of them
The other job offers well they pretty much suck to put it in lamen terms.. I knew it was going to be a very difficult thing to do far as finding a job I would make about the same money as I was and not to mention how well I was treated by the company....
Ah heck maybe I will just sell everything and become a beach bum....
LOL oh ya old J.B. Hunt and their tricky ways in tricking you to call them.... I had one leave a voice text message from a Sprint cellular phone that I called back... After about 10 minutes of talking to this lady I finally got her to tell me what company it was lol old J.B.
Kept on talking about how they changed and blah blah blah...... Any company that has to resort to tricking you into calling a recruiter should be a huge red flag to anyone considering that company......
