Thanks guys, and Yes ducks I have pulled some weird ones, and the company I am going to does do some weird stuff too so I am pumped, they have a very good rep and have the same name as the greatest Democratic president this country has ever had.. Yes over the past 16 years I have pulled some strange stuff. Like one day we got called from a local company that manufactures giant centrifuges to seperate oil from water mostly, they are gone now but in the day they were big, they also made giant screws like a cork screw for sewage treatment plants, Any how I go over their to pick up it was over dimen, so I brought signs and flags, they put what looks like a flying sauser on my deck with the indoor overhead crane, It was like 12' in dia 7 ft' tall and about 18k, i threw some straps over it and went on my way to the recipent which was a comapny called Raynor. They do specialized welding and heat treating that can only be done there in the country they have huge ovens and cook metal sometimes for days.. So I get there and start walking with some guy looking for another guy You know the deal, as I am walking through this giant place I am looking at all theese silo looking things and everything was familiar, then I saw the light I had seen this place on nova and theese silos are the giant storage containers they use to put spent rods in fron nuke power plants, This is the place where they assemble all the parts and heat treat the whole #### thing with a giant tent oven. So I start asking all theese questions and the guy appreciated my inqusitveness, so we got in a golf cart and he took me to the other side of the compound, where we drove up tp a trailer which had to be 75' long and honestly had about 50 wheels on each side of it. Had a control deck on the back along with a giant push pad,,, See when theese thinhs are finished the weigh and this number is not exact only because I cant remember but something like 82 ton yep 164k lbs, they have to move them half way across the country on this thing, it takes 4 weeks and they can only move it like 3 hours a night,,, it was real interesting..In the office of the guy I was dealing with he had a picture of 3 of theese things in some field in the winter it was an areial shot and there were giant circles around each of them where no snow had accumulated because the thisgs are still hot.
I have so many more I could bore You guys forever, we did alot of specialized stuff because my old mans best friend is the manager for UACL in this area so when there was local weirdness to be done we got it. Plus we were good riggers. I have moved out of buildgings on to trailers everythng from giant 30 ft long ovens to huge paper splice machines that hold thoes giant rolls of paper and load it into the press. Yep Butler was a coustomer of ours.. I personally moved the robot called hercules that woods hole and robert ballard use to find things like the Titanic, No kidding. Brought a screw to a treatment plant on Randalls Island N.Y. took the crane 5 hours to show up so i enjoyed a day hanging on the island looking across the hudson into the city what a view, That day was 9/10/01.....When I went back 2 months later to get that screw out the view had changed dramatically...... That will stick with me forever, when I heard the news that next morning all I kept saying was my god I was just there.
Ok enoughf out of me.

Hey guy's
well it has been 3 weeks now and things are going great at the job, I picked up on how things work on the road real quick, really no transition prpblems from being a local driver, I love it I am really digging the work, I have always loved flat bed work anyhow, most of the loads are pre loaded and tarped, but what I didnt realize is that they pay me for unstrapping and untarping the load too. not just if I have to tarp, so far my lightest week has been 2300 miles, and this week was my biggest so far with 3300, they put me in a new columbia which is nice but I wiuld rather something a little tougher, I am not fond of the auto trans but whatever, I will say the truck rides like a caddy and if I treat it nice will get about 6.5 loaded. What is nice though is I am really loving the work, and am having a blast, I should have done this long ago instead of farting around local, the adjustment of being away from wife and kids is hard but I think everyone will be ok with it,.. Oh yeah and as far as getting use to a sleeper over a day cab, just like you guys said I dont even notice it when I am backing now. I am going to buy a card so I can access the net on the road so I will be in touch more frequently. -
Way to go Doma! Glad you are having fun... thats what its all about!

I hope alot of young or new drivers read your story. It's a perfect example why you want to keep your record clean and drive safe. You've reach a good goal that I believe every driver should set for himself.
I did almost the same thing but backwards. I came off the road and went to local driving. But that was hauling gasoline and just like you it was the best job I could ever hope for. We also had 11 paid holidays but they changed from your birthday to the day after Thanksgiving. Which was much better. If you had those days as your normal work day and worked a day of overtime you made a killing. It was 2 days at 2½ times then 1 day at 1½ then 10 hours at 1½. We worked 4 10 hour days but you could work 12 each day for the overtime. So changing the birthday was the best thing they could do for us. Also be smart and use all the company has to offer for retirement and savings plans.
Don't feel bad about driving a day cab. We had a driver that just retired with over 28 years safe driving. He didn't have a scratch on his record and that's something for a gasoline tanker driver that drives in the city every day. He never filled out a log book and he didn't know how to hook or unhook the trailer. We drove truck and trailers and the truck was always hooked up to the trailer. So it's no big deal that you never had a sleeper behind you because your record speaks for you.
Another BIG indicator that you found and I've always said before is look for a company that has drivers that retire. That tells a big story on how the company is going to treat the drivers. There's always a reason for high turnover rates and the company being top notch is not one of them.
So congrats and good luck. -
My husband has been a driver for 6 years now and wants to team with me so I am going to school for the 3 week training the only thing is he hasn't been on the road for 2 months so i need to find a company that will let me go into a truck with him after my 3week training does anyone know of a company out there that will let us do that? Please help

most companies i have looked at like the experience to be within the last year but all the recruiters for the companies know the requirements. as far as which company what would you like to haul, most companies specialize in 1 or 2 types of transport (dry van, refer, tank, flat).

Doma, sounds like Kennedy ,am I right,if you are not happy there, give E.J. Presscott a call at PEP trucking,My son drives there, over 6 years now and makes 46 to 60cts a mile, they pay miles, strapping, unstrapping, tarping, untarping, dropping and hooking, pay rate on everything you do,lifetime uniforms, full safety boot reinbursement,160.00 a day for holiday pay, sick days, life insurance paid,They hire out of Ma.,you have the truck at home,in the process of buying brand new volvos, not turned back, micrawaves, fridges, tvs,. Home weekends, paid every two weeks,my son is home weekends and clears 1600 to 2200 every week. Great place to work,I worked there for 3 ys but getting older and wanted van work. You are at a prime age to get on with them, they may have my son bring you there to gardiner maine,I know they would have a ride for you if you needed one. Good luck with you, wherever you go. Pep pays you hub miles, not many do,you get all the miles there that you run.

Doma, you are exactally what my husband wants to be. he is starting on Monday. went from a factory for 18 years to trucking. He fell in love with it at school so i can only imagine what will happen once on the road. when he gets the experience he wants to hall the big stuff, its the rush of it. we both are that way. i'm going to ride along. the kids are all over 18 now so time to live our dream. you so inspired me you'll never know. We are flat bedding as well, left that part out. anyways my best to you and i can't wait till i get on the road with him, i love the rush as well.

Thanks to all for all the feed back, and ready to go I am glad I have encouraged You guys, It really is what You make it. I talk to other guys from the company that are not happy, but when I ask some questions I see why, LAZY! that is the only explanation, I am not putting my self in some kind of great light, but I like to run and run hard, sleep with me is optional and always has been so I am lucky that way, I also like to be at my delivery usually the night before. I never stay at a truck stop if I have a load on If I can avoid it. I will park right at the gate and be first off in the morning, then on my way to my next pick up I will stop at a ta or pilot and shower, and it is a rule of mine to shower every day nomatter what, it just makes me feel good, I may run 400 miles b4 I take it but I always get it in... I am a clean and neat freak almost to the point of overexcess.. There is never dust on my dash or crumbs on my carpet. And I just installed all BLACK wall to wall carpet in the truck.. The outside is the same and I am always wiping and cleaning, The mechanics love me because I carry a 12 volt grease gun and make sure she is never dry.. I think all this weirdness is from being so involved in my familys company, I have always belived the cleaner I keep it the better it will run.. And Yeah I am one of the silly ones who shines his tires. SILLY specially in flatbed bussiness I am always off road.. But thats what makes it fun for me. I love trucks and love just being around them, I still walk the lines at the truck stops to check out the equiptment.... Things are still going well, but I think my dispatcher my not like me ... I asked on monday if I could be home on wed at 200 pm to pick my wife up from surgery, he said no problem. but then on tue at 10 am I am rec a load from pittsburg to Va then pick up in balt to mass for monday.. so I was definately not going to make it. So I called him but he never took my call and never answered my message. All I wanted was a reason, even if he forgot I can understand, but to totally blow me off was kinda crappy, I understand things get screwed up and I would have been fine with that, but he smoked me.. I did what I was told, but it is a balck mark.. What if it was real important, not that my wifes surgery wasent. but you hear me...So other that that things are still awsome. But after reading the PEP post I am definately going to look, it almost sounds too good to be true, but I do see them everywhere.. They Have nice equipt. So its nice to know there are options..
