If a company that wanted to hire me would expect that I would quit my current job without giving notice, it would cause me to rethink my decision to work for them in the first place.

Well it's been 2 weeks,I wonder if Allie Cat gave her/his employer a notice. That's a tough decision but if that crude oil job did'nt work out I think it would be easier for Cat to get his or her job back if he/her gave them a notice.

A 2 week notice is a choice and a courtesy, not a requirement...If you work in a small field, it may not be wise to not give a notice, in an industry like ours, it's not an issue and has nothing to do with integrity and more to do with personal responsibility to your family and moving to a better place for them as soon as possible...If you're unhappy because you're not making enough money to pay your bills, how would it be responsible as the money maker in your family to stay and hurt them more?....We're truckers, not lawyers or doctors, this is a non-issue in our industry...You work for your family first, company 2nd and your financial decisions should be made knowing that..

I think it's more important to get your new job before leaving the old one as "in our industry" it's not unheard of for an employer to trash you on your DAC and hurt your options and that 2 week notice may be enough to screw you, we've read those stories here more than once...

Thats a good point when you apply for a new job, let it be known that after your current company is contacted your fm,dm dispatcher what ever you wanna call them will be notified your looking for new work in most cases. This could result in getting treated like absolute dog ####, or on the flip side a sudden change towards the better, 50/50.

Well I guess that al depends on which would hurt your family more. Would it hurt them more to give notice and bring in a smaller paycheck for two more weeks or would it hurt them more to quit without notice, go to the new job, have it fall though or turn out to be a bad deal and then end up bringing in no paycheck at all for a month or more because you now have a bad stuff on your DAC?

When you agree to take a new job, there is nothing keeping the new employer from changing their mind an hour from now. When you agree to take a new job there is nothing keeping the new employer from lying through their teeth about how much you're going to make. How is burning the bridge at the old job doing what is better for you family in that case?

    Thank you.

Id give notice, that's just how I am. A weeks notice is still better than no notice.

It was said earlier in this thread that "why give notice, the employer isn't going to give you a notice that you'll be fired". All I could think was, the employer wouldn't fire you if you don't give them a reason too.

My company does want a notice, there's a driver on this forum that has quit roehl 3 times and every time he came back they hired him on.

i gave two weeks notice to my last company, while my present company wasn't thrilled about it, they respected my decision.

i'll have in the past, and will give notice to an employer that doesn't suck

Yeah, we've all read MANY (one sided) stories here more than once with "facts" surrounding them more than a bit suspect but often, people choose to accept them as accurate and truthful because everybody loves to bash "the man".
