    Dear TR Forum,

I now have a CDL Class A Permit with the following endorsements: General Knowledge, combination, air brakes, tanker, hazmat and doubles/triples. What a bear--especially the hazmat and air brakes sections. The only endorsement I do not have is metal coil. However, I have heard a pro complain that hauling metal coil is no fun due to the cab shaking violently as one drives. Is this true? Also, would you recommend I get the metal coil endorsement at this stage considering I only have a CDL Class A Permit and have yet to start my driving school on weekends (because I work overtime weekdays in a different field)?

    Thanks,

If you ever intend to drive flatbed, Metal coils is a big part of some operations and you won't be able to (presuming you're in NY) pick up or deliver without it. I'm not sure if that would apply out of state, if you did pick up and deliver and didn't have the endorsement. That's a good question to ask the NY DOT. :D

Yes,you need a coil endorsement if you intend to haul steel/flatbed.This is another i love NY BS tax on its residents.Of course,if you are from any other state.or province,or country, for that matter, you are more than welcome to come in to NY,and haul all the metal coils your lil heart desires, with no endorsement.Since we live in NY,we need the endorsement.People who are telling you coils ride badly are either very OLD,and have experience with obsolete equipment,or are full of crap.A properly placed coil load, will ride as well as any other load,on a modern truck.Coils are very dangerous if not properly secured, you could seriously hurt,or kill, yourself,or others,so be sure you know what your doing(ask ask ask,any experienced driver in the mill will tell you what/how)and be safe.

I have heard many complain about driving in New York City. That's a no-brainer. It about as much fun as a triple-hernia or driving in Los Angeles during rush hour. However, I rarely hear about drivers complaining about driving outside of NYC in upstate New York, for example. Compared to NYC, upstate New York is the wild west. 21-metro-heat-ss-slide-42WM-blog480.jpg

If loaded properly it WONT shake. Coils are some of the easiest loads if you know what your doing.

Coil cert. is a short test you can do when you go for orentation with most flatbed companies, you can also get one yourself on line before you leave home.I don't know about the reg.'s in most states but I know you have to have them now in Alabama if your picking up a coil.If you don't have one when you go to pick up the load they will not load you with a coil. Also,I've been hauling coils loaded in the directions called: eye to the sky, shotgun, and suicide.I've been hauling coil's for 9 years and I've never had one make my truck ride or drive different. (and coil pay is great).:yes2557:

Question........ and I should know this..... Does the Alabama coil certification have to be for both suicide loaded coils and skidded coils? I thought the certification was just for securement of the stand up/suicide loaded coils. Do the skidded coils need the endorsement as well?

When it (al cert.) was required, it covered all coils.
