Well guys, I start my new career as a tanker driver tomorrow! Of course I have to go thru all the tons of paperwork and CBTs before I start my training...that should take at least 3 days. I want to thank all of you for your valuable information and feedback on The Forum. I'll be giving updates about my status on a regular basis. I haven't been in front of a computer in a while but here is the update so far...loving the job...my trainer is mainly making sure I know how to process the oil and all the paperwork involved before allowing me to actually drive. I should start driving next week. Excited but extremely nervous about driving a tanker. The good thing is that the company is really strict about safety. They are not rushing me and want me to take my time in learning. What I am concerned about is that when I am in the truck with my trainer, I notice that there are A LOT of careless truckers on the road. What is up with that?!?
It's bad enough having to watch out for cars. Not all truckers are bad but it is RIDICULOUS what I am seeing on the TX roads. I guess that is what makes me more nervous than anything. But, I know I just have to suck it up and do what I need to do to be safe.

Yeah. Them "Booming Cowboys" think they are doing just fine. What you see is what happens during oil booms. -
I think it's more than just the oil boom. I remember thinking the exact same thing 5 years ago when I started. You assume safety is priority 1 and without the experience are more cautious than just about everyone else. I had a friend (VP with SouthEastern Freight) tell me the most dangerous time for a new trucker is when they get comfortable and lose the fear of the equipment. I was shocked at what I saw then and still am today. Its mostly tailgating and aggressive lane changes and is everywhere...not just the oil patch. Line Haul drivers pulling doubles are some of the worst offenders.Logan76 Thanks this.

Unfortunately a lot of what you said is true.
But down where she has moved, the cowboys have taken it quite a bit further. Everybody expects you to get out of their way on the two lane roads down there, because they intend on driving 80, whatever the posted speed limit may be, whatever condition the road surface may be, regardless of oncoming traffic.
I was being passed last spring by a couple of pickups. A third got impatient and went into the ditch to pass me. When the Yahoo came back onto the asphalt, he hit the back pickup of the two whom passed me on the left. It was a two lane road south of I-37 that runs west out of Corpus Christi. The posted speed limit was 65, I was doing 70. I was still to slow for the yahoos.
These "booms" seem to have attracted the worst that is available. It didn't used to be like that. -
DOT has been cacking down in that area lately. I saw one Gulfmark truck pulled over.
