New to driving, don't have CDL. Probably gonna try to get on with a training company that does the school. After calling a handful of these companies (Swift, Werner, Central Refrig., CR England) its difficult to get the detail answers. The recruiters sound busy when you call, or sometimes not very knowledgeable.
I am trying to understand if it helps to take the written permit test first on my own, before getting to their school academy? They say you have to pay for the permit fee at DMV, so it sounds like they way they usually get you into their classroom, learn enough to take the permit test at DMV, then if you pass that it's time for actual truck driving training out in the yard. Sound about right?
BUt my question is if I take the permit test first on my own at the local DMV, would this speed up the process? Does any company actually prefer you to do this first?

It would helP, but it really doesn't matter. How come you aren't getting your CDL at a private school? If it's not a money thing, I would go that route.

Don't see the advantage to getting CDL at a private school. I understand it means you won't be under contract commitment after school, but seems good to know that I'd be working for the company that schools and get the first year of experience (or more) of actually driving. From what I found so far about pay, you make the same low pay rates even if you do a private school and then get hired on as a newbie. Am I missing something?

if you can.. i get the permit before school.it be less stress. doing so wouldn,t shorten the school . also might want to get hazmat added on too. have to get fingerprinted and background check done for that. takes a few weeks for that process.

If you go with a company school program you owe them either your life for 1 year or $6K.
If something happens and you bail, they will sick the collectors on you while destroying your credit rating.
Now let's say you're subject to all manner of abuse and just deal with it, BUT you get into a little "preventible" crinkle fender somewhere or you're late one too many loads, etc. They'll fire you for cause AND you'll still owe them for their school. Company schools are a BIG risk for this reason.
Whereas you go to a private school and they'll reimburse you weekly and you're paid back within a year anyway.
Company school programs are for people who're desperate and the carrier knows they have you by the cajones for at least a year. You're essentially an indentured servant. And they can abuse you and you can't mess up. It's all a matter of risk.
FYI - You have to get a DOT physical before the DMV will give you a permit. You can take the test, but then you just have to come back with the DOT phys. The first offical step is the physical.HughJack Thanks this. -

see if a community college in your area has a truck driving and cdl course. it will typically be cheaper AND better. it will be longer, but that only means you learn more.
