We have two 07 petes with c-15 accerts in them. They were originally set at 475hp then we bumped them both up to 550hp to see if that would help with fuel mileage. It did help a little but not even getting 6mpg with them. Just wondering if anyone had some tricks we could do with out spending an arm and leg to do it. Our other trucks have 2WS 550's in them and will get well over six. Now i know there is quiet a differance between the two with all the emissions on the accert. We just need to see what we can do before we sell them and go back to non accert motors

I have the same engine in a 07 flattop and have been trying to get better myself. I have replaced the primary filter head with a full flow one, this was an update back when they were new and it helps a little, then I put in the new spring kit in the fuel pump to raise the fuel pressure up to 105 and that helped a little and then I've had the overhead run by somebody that was good with an accert, took some talking to differant places to get a comfortable feel for the right guy because these are a little more tempermental than the old ones, and that helped a little. There is a gentleman on here that goes by Mr. Haney, he will probably see your thread and contact you about ECM update he does, I haven't done it yet but am considering it. It's not cheap but with 4.00 fuel and the possibity of a gain of about 3/4 mph or better that wouldn't take long to pay back. I pull van and with the flattop I'm lucky to get 6mpg but with slowing down and watching my p's & q's I can stay close, mostly 5.5 to 5.8, 6 on the good days. Good luck to you sir!

CG1 have u thought about putting a wing on the top to help with the air flow. Getting it over the nose of the trailer instead of against the flat would help with mpgs....maybe not by much but every little bit helps.

Thanks for the wing idea but I don't like them. Lucky for me the trailers I pull have the bubbles on the front of them and I feel there just as good. They sometimes have to rent ryder trailers and you can tell a big difference in them, big time in a cross head wind. I know I give up some with the flattop but thats what I've always run and enjoy them yet after 36 years, thank again.

High flow mufflers are not that expensive and do help.

I have been working on my C-15 for two years and have had sucess with the following changes, of course aerodynamics is the most important next to engine RPM,, Big Cats take a set amount of fuel to carry a certain amount of RPM no matter what the load. I base these findings on my experience running a NHRA<IHRA stock eliminator car for 12 years where .02 seconds of ET increase is a big jump. The following and my gains are as follows; Slow down to 65 mph [ .3 mpg gain], synthetic or the new Chevron oil [.3 gpm }, full 3 axle alignment by a [ GOOD] alignment shop [.2 mpg], Bullydog program, [.6 mpg], use of cetane booster in every tank [.15 mpg], refusal to use unbranded diesel fuel, ie/ Pilot, loves etc, [.3 mpg] ..... I started at 5.63 mpg.. and now average around 6.9 to 7.2 mpg average pulling a sloppy tanker, at app 525 hp, P.S/ Eliminate any excess idling as Acerts will carbon up the intake manifold and lose performance and it will take forever to get it cleaned out with cleaners'. Have fun!

If you want fuel mileage, you need to take this engine into a GOOD diesel performance shop, and have all the emissions crap torn off of it. Get yourself a conversion kit and you can turn that ACCERT into a single turbo 6NZ. Cost? I am guessing about $8,000. Up front, it's pricey, I know. However, I can pretty much guarantee you would gain at least a full mile per gallon, PLUS extended engine life, and gobs more power.
