Solder gun and heat shrink tubing, wire from 10 to 16 or 18 gauge. Butt connectors are a quick fix but there also a quick fail also. I would carry both, throw a butt connector on when your in a hurry, but when you get some time solder it and fix it right. Other than that I think what every one else mentioned would just about cover you. Depending on how BIG of repair jobs you want to get into, maybe an impact wrench air or battery.

RTV gasket maker. RTV blue or black. Flange gaskets are an easy fix, but can cost $250 or more for a road call. 10 or 20 ton jack. Make a list from everyones posts.

adjustable wrenches
vise grips[
extra radiator and heaterhose clamps
about 4 ft of heater hose
a LARGE asortment of fuses
a couple of ft of wire (various gauge)QUOTE=Steeleandsonfarms;2819502]What tools should I carry with me on the road? I own my own rig and am just getting into this. I'm thinking along the lines of:
3/8" socket set
100' of air hose
glad hand to air line adapter
air chuck and spare valve cores and core tool
screw driver set
metric and sae end wrenches(up to what size though?)
16 oz. ballpien hammer and 3 pound mini sledge
What else do you all think I need?
Aside from tools, what else should I have?[/QUOTE] -

This thread has a lot of good ideas as well.
I like multi-use tools. If I had to pick my top 3 they would be, in order:
1. A high quality LED flashlight. Nothing worse than working in the dark with a $3 POS with weak batteries wishing you had a good one. With spare batteries of course. Doubles as a club.
2. A 4' wrecking bar. Great for prying broken/stuck things. Hold like a pool cue to knock stubborn tandem pins. Break up pallets for dunnage.
3. Roofing hammer. Hammer head on one side for beating things, axe on the back for chopping things. I'll leave the multiple uses to your imagination.

You might want to get a roll of electrical tape. Duct tape would work for a time, but when it comes to wiring I prefere electrical tape. Someone mentioned lights. I try to keep at least one of each type of light that goes on my truck and trailer. I also keep spare connectors. You will pay a very high premium on the road. Besides, if you find a light out at a rest area it is easier and faster to just make the repair after your pretrip rather than taking a chance on making it to a truck stop without getting stopped. Most DOT won't mess with a truck with a light out, but some will. A couple of other things that I thought of is pliers and perhaps wire strippers, although with a knife and pliers you can do the same thing. I also keep a spare fan belt. At one time I also kept a spare air governor. I have a friend who keeps a spare alternator in his side box. The more you carry the more you weigh. You might be surprised at what you can do with a pliers, screwdriver and adjustable wrench.
