Hey thanks for the info, unfortunately I'm only 21. I'll still look them up, who knows. When I was trying to think of every local job possible I somehow forgot cement trucks so I'll add that to my list to apply too. Heh, dont worry I'll put in the good word at pepsi!....

Also, did some more research... Found a ton of ltl/line haul companies that are in San diego. Didn't think there would be so many. Now to see if any will give me a chance, at least on the dock even.....I drove a box truck filling vending machines, loaded that thing up packed full of pepsi and coke cases. Somehow I doubt any distributors would count that as experience.

Its really hard to tell how many local or short haul companies are actually in your area. I live in the OC and Im planning on hitting up a I5 and 22/405 over pass and take notes of which trucks are driving by. Then I will head home and do some more research on those companies. I know Im going to look weird sitting there in my chair with a notepad and pen but who cares. I want to know what my options are.

Yeah I'm sure there are a bunch more, I just looked up the main line haul and beverage companies and was happy to see majority are in the San Diego area. Maybe I'll follow your idea too. Who knows how many smaller trucking companies there are there that I can't simply find by googling trucking San Diego.........

No I did not rachi. When I called they told me what to do as far as applying goes, I then asked what their hiring requirements are. The first thing the lady was minimum of 25 years old, she then stated their rules as far as criminal/driving history goes. After hearing 25 I kinda stopped listening to the rest, when she was done talking I said thank you and hung up, didn't bother to ask about pay.

Regarding Con-Way, it's not "sometimes you can get them to hire you for dock work," it's ALL the time for new drivers. This company requires new drivers to work the docks whether you go through their CDL school or whether you're a recent grad with a CDL. They require new CDL grads to go through their "Finishing" program so the driver gets a better "understanding" of the freight business which is a load of crock. To me this is a way to get cheap labor. Straight from their website in regard to their school AND new CDL grads from other schools:

"To be eligible for the program, participants need to be 21 years or older, have a passion for the transportation industry and pass a drug screen and physical exam. Candidates are first hired as dock workers to gain an understanding of the freight business and insight into what it’s like to work for Con-way Freight. "

They definitely put the "con" in CON-WAY!
