Jet beat me to it about Vegas terminal...posted while I was composing mine. Great minds think alike...
When in Vegas, you can always try to find a spot at the terminal. I've parked there twice when I had to unload. Not too far off the interstate. Not much of a terminal, but I was able to find space along the parking spots next to the street. Also, if they are short on trailers around back you can park there as well.
With the chains, remember you need 4 for the super singles and I believe 2 for the trailers for the places that require trailer chains as well (like California). I had super singles on my daycab and chains still in the bag in the little toolbox on the back of the cab...never took 'em out as I just ran from SFS to Desert Center and back...
I would always ALWAYS start early when I was on a long multi day trip. I did a run from SFS to Alabama/Georgia. A 2 stopper. Stopped and did the drop in 'bama and drove to a TS outside of Atlanta. Went to sleep at 7pm eastern since my delivery was 6am eastern in Atlanta. Luckily it was a drop/hook there. After I dropped, I went to the dark side of the Roadrunner terminal and got a few extra hours until the QC beeped at me. It was a Roadrunner load. They suck since they pile all kinds of crap, and I mean all kinds. At the first drop there was everything from boxes of drapes to a store-sized refrigerator. When I pulled the truck from the dock and went to close the doors (it was a drop/hook there too), I found they had used clear packing tape across the door opening in a few places just to keep the crap in. I looked at it, shook my head and shut and sealed the door. I made sure to tell the receivers in Alabama how it was loaded and they said the loads from Cali terminal all were like that. I literally cracked the door open and looked and had to grab a couple of things that were falling as I opened it....the good thing was it was only like 16k, so I got good mileage all across the country....
Wow, I've been rambling, haha. Take care Wolf and enjoy your hometime!
Oh, one more thing. If you meet a driver based in Modesto named Mike Woodard, make friends with him. He was in 1939 Volvo last I heard. He's a long time driver and knows all kinds of stuff. He gave me his number and was a help to me when I was a n00b. Last I heard he was on the Bayrunner gig.
Coming to orientation Aug 13th...

#@$#......rookie move... I forgot we had a terminal in Vegas.
jet460.....I have been putting "HMT 09-28" in my check calls.. And i know at least one dispatcher was making an effort to get me closer to home. However, I had to swap loads with someone when the truck needed an extra day in the shop. (I wasn't going to make the pickup on the load that would have taken me to the SF bay area.)
Oh, and nice boat in your sig. I had to sell mine to finance my CDL schooling.
Warpdrvr.... I will look for him. I am of the opinion that the more information I can absorb from more experienced drivers the better. (hence being on this site).
Anyway, time to go unload and hopefully catch a load going closer to home. -
Hey guys, I have orientation with W/S Nov. 19th in Conover. Has anyone been there for orientation? Kristy gave me a bunch of info but I forgot to ask where they put you up at. Any info would be appreciated.
Thanks! -

You'll stay at the Days Inn, it's maybe a half mile from the Conover terminal where you'll be trained. Someone from training will pick you up from the hotel each day.

Update......
I have the song lyrics "Back in the saddle again".... running through my head.
Dropped a load of at the costco center in Tracy CA. WOW....now THAT was a well organized and ran location... 45 minutes from the time I checking in at the gate, to the time I left unloaded.. nice... even had a spiffy pager thingy to let me know when I was unloaded..
Deadhead back to our Modesto terminal, to grab a loaded trailer heading into Washington.
I decided to cut the day short though, and shut down early. Is it bad that I was looking forward to getting back into my truck so I could get some REST? lol....
Nah, my 2.5 yr daughter is sick, and kept me up half last night...
Anyway.
Once more unto the breach...
Side note....
Becker, you still checking in here now and then? haven't heard from ya in a while.. -
Update.......
Been a few days since I put something in here, and I dont want the thread to die.
Currently making my way through Wisconsin, on a 7 pick up route. Mostly items being returned....
Geeze.... Fitting a 53 ft trailer into some places these folks expect us to is hard on the nerves... I haven't hit anything yet, but have gotten dang close on more than a few occasions.. Downtown Minneapolis.......really? What made people think it was a good idea to try and get these trucks in there????? Heaven help you if you miss your turn... it can take 20 minutes to get back to the spot ya just passed. Tight turns, road construction, traffic... yeah... my blood pressure was through the roof waiting to hear a "crunch" from somewhere behind me... I did have one spot of humor though.. i had to swing WAAAAAAY left to make a right turn, and was almost entirely on the wrong side of the road to do it... much to the amusement of the traffic cop... As I started my turn, a sports car with a blond in a hurry, dove into the hole to try and make a right turn inside me... but.... predictably, could not actually make the turn, since by the time she got to the corner, I was already cranked hard right, and she had no space... also.... no space to back up..... She started yelling at me....
something about stupid trucks.... Did i mention the traffic cop? Yep... he stepped in right about here... mad at me? nope.... he tore into her about HER driving... (I was kinda stuck and couldnt move at this point) She mouthed off, and he directed her into a parking spot to write her a ticket for something. not sure what.... Kinda made my day... With his help, i was able to finish making the turn without hearing any crunching noises...
Side note.... google earth is your friend!!!!!! If I had simply gone to the address, or followed the ladys phone directions, I would have been in deep trouble... by being on a street with NO chance of making a U-turn, or making it past the obstructions... With Google earth, i was able to plot a path in that avoided those issues...
Anyway... gotta go make a pickup today, then start running to Conover...hup Thanks this.
