Looks and sounds impressive, and more like what I'm looking for. Are they the sort of company to hire new drivers? Maybe on the nitro side of things?

Lotsa people rent rooms around here or room and board, I went the apartment route in sylvan but its only 625/month, room and board can be 300-400/month which I think is cheap when you make more than that in one day.

I have 17 yrs driving experience pretty well all hwy driving. Would they hire someone like me?
-
I came out here from the East Coast with the same mentality my friend. Unfortunately the reality of it is, most of these rotational jobs require you to need an appartment at your home base. Because during your 15 days on, there will be times you will be sent home to do shop work and won't always be out on the field.

Experienced drivers are probably the most sought after trade in all of Alberta.

Field rate is full pay. Picking a number out of the air, think in terms of $40 per hour plus overtime at the applicable provincial standard. That is paid out for any revenue-producing project.
Then you have shop time paid at (a theoretical value of) $25, and finally crew change in a pickup at around $12.50.
So for a typical day, I might get 13 hours of field time plus two hours at the crew-change travel rate. A big chunk of that is going to be overtime at 1.5 or sometimes even double time..
If we are mobilizing or demobilizing equipment, that is paid at full field rate. The travel rate is only applied to crew-changes in a pickup where we are paying two sets of people for a period when we can only bill the customer for one set.
We also have a very decent benefit package and some goodies like stock purchase and matching RRSPs that are nice to have.
The guarantee is the $ value of a certain number of field hours for every day of your 15 day shift. If you don't make that dollar value on a given day, the guarantee tops that day off. It represents a serious amount of money, far more than the salaries I have received in the past.
Its for 2012 only for now, and we will know if its going to be extended to 2013 by the end of Oct. Frankly, I'm not worried as we have so much work the guarantee almost never kicks in.
The exactly dollar values are going to vary according to what position you have, but hopefully this gives you the basics on how the system works. I really like it.

Maybe. We have in the past. STEP hires for attitude as well as experience. On the basis you can teach skills, but attitudes are hard to change. Seems to work well for us.

I've been speaking with STEP's HR department. It seems that they are hiring experienced Coiltubers. I appreciate all the information, this is a company i'd like to work for.
-
They might. My class 1 plus previous experience from years ago in the oilfield plus a good interview got me hired. I know we are always looking for experienced drivers with the right attitude, and we seem to want to develop a mix of experience levels. We do have more N2 bulkers and pumpers on the way.
This is a very good place to get ahead because we are relatively small while seeming to be able to generate all the work we can handle.

Might be worth staying in touch. The hiring mix changes frequently.
GeoBastCoast Thanks this.
