You're going to want access to some sort of mapping/GPS service or its going to be brutal trying to find your way around. Personally I found Google Maps on my iPhone to be the gold standard even for getting around in a big truck. You simply need to able to see where you are going before you go there, especially pulling a long box where you can't just flip a u turn any old place and getting lost is generally a bad idea. Back in the old days paper maps of metro areas picked up where the motor carrier atlas left off in terms of map detail, but nowadays mapping/GPS programs have taken the place of paper maps. You still want a rand McNally motor carrier atlas though as it has lots of important truck specific info.

    BigRedBigRig Thanks this.

I actually ran thru all of those states multiple times (except KS, only once) and never seemed to have any issues. I did not use it for data though, I used Verizon for that, they do have a better 3G data network. That was 2 years ago, before 4G. I'd prolly still use Verizon if I got back on the road

I rescheduled my orientation and I start with W&S on Monday. My prepaid phone will get me by for now... and I'll look into a truck gps unit and Verizon when I can afford them.

Thank you all for your advice!
