Like so many others I too am a newbie to this industry after nearly 30 years in real estate I've decided its time to find something that will provide a steady income and some health insurance. I'm attending a great class at a local community college and we have many trucking companies recruiting directly from this school.

    • Crete
    • Roehl
    • Maverick
    • Swift
    • Schneider
    • TMC
    • Werner
    • Boyd Brother
    • US Express
Like most folks I want to make decent money and I also want to be home to spend time with family, hunt and fish!

From what I've read most companies do not want you idling the truck so you can be comfortable, I HATE to sweat and I cannot sleep if I'm hot so an APU is pretty important.

Based on that and my Kansas City location what companies do you recommend or think will fit the bill for my requirements.

I'm not afraid of hard work, I'll tarp or strap loads; I'd prefer to not have to handle freight or act as a customer service rep if I can avoid it. Frankly I've been in a people business for 3 decades and I really don't want to have to kiss customer ### everyday. Just drop off the load and go back to work. :biggrin_25514:

Boyd Bros. Has a great reputation. I have not worked for any of them so no first hand experience.

Check each companies website, that recruit from your school.
The website will show where the terminals are & usually will have info. about the trucks, such as APU's.
TMC, Boyd, Maverick have good reputations, from my experience talking to their drivers when I pulld a flatbed.
Something to think about in the near future; drive4marten.com has a terminal in your city & their trucks have APU's. They want 6 months OTR experience.

Just saw an ad for Nu-Way. nuway.com or 800/232-9243, ask for Sherri. Hiring area looks like the middle of the country. Pic shows a tanker of liquid nitrogen. Most importantly, the ad says they pay hub miles!

Which school in KC are you at?

Any of the companies you listed are fine to start with. Kansas City (my area) has the most trucking jobs of any city based on its location. Just get a good six months in and you can hire on with the local firms. As for APU's, if they are not in the truck you can idle.

I would really give this some serious thought. Having a family and or spouse just doesn't mix with this career. Unfortunately to make any kind of decent money you have to run a minimum of 6-8 weeks out there. There are reasons for this in which I won't get into here if you would like them just "pm" me. With that being said local is possible but usually highly unlikely. I wouldn't spend $6000 on school with the thoughts of going local right away. At the very least you are going to have to put in a year over the road to gain some experience and seniority.

Out of your choices above probably the best would be Crete/Schaffer. They are a really good company and you have a really good earning potential with them. Make sure to call them first and talk to a recruiter though because they only except newbies from certain accredited schools. They really have strict standards in part being why they are such a good company. If you could get your foot in the door with them you really have a good opportunity to have a long lasting career with an excellent company from the get-go! Besides these companies I would also highly recommend Central Refrigerated. They are also a very good company to get started with and have a school in which you can get into the industry without forking out $6000 to get started. Yes you have to sign a contract but personally I would rather be on the hook with a trucking company than a bank or financial institution or worse yet, the government. If you default in paying them back they won't come after you for a judgement or put a lien on your house. The biggest perk in going this route is that you are guaranteed a job provided you pass their tests. This is definitely a no brainer!

    Good luck man...
