Hi from Texas! I've been lurking through this board and finally decided to make an account. A little about myself, I am currently 21, and am looking to get my foot in the job with either Swift, CR England, or Stevens. I already sent off online applications and received what I believe to be an auto response from Stevens saying thank you for applying and if you don't hear from us in 48 hours to please call our recruiting number. Don't even know if Swift's went through since after hitting submit, it sent me to a blank white page, CR England at least had a thank you for applying type of page after submitting it. The question I want to ask is will it be tough getting a job with no stable work history and with 1 accident on record which I got earlier this year? Now when it comes to work history, the only thing I have is temp work and that's 1 month here, then 2 months with this company and so on, just send to one job after another with no job lasting for more than 3 months. So now onto the accident part, I was told by the police when I got the accident that no one was at fault since it was deemed just that, an accident due to bad weather. A truck in front of me swerved to the shoulder to try and avoid hitting the car in front that came to a sudden stop and the only thing I could so was hit my breaks to have my wheels lock up and slide into the car in front. Big Rig to the right and truck on the shoulder to the left so not much to do but hit the brakes... Totaled my car since I was going the speed limit which was 65MPH and the car I hit that had slowed down due to traffic was already down to 40MPH. Neither of us got a ticket but I do not know if it will still show on my report so I simple come clean and say I was in a accident. From what I can remember there are two fields on the applications, for accidents that were your fault and accidents that were not.
So there you have it, a brief story of what my current condition is right now.

First, don't limit yourself to a couple of companies in the beginning. Now, did you work for a temp. company that sent workers out to different companies? If so, the temp. company counts as one company and where they sent you to doesn't matter; you worked for the temp. company. If it wasn't a temp. company, try to explain that in your area jobs are scarce and you were doing the best possible to stay employed and that's another reason you're going the trucking route now. Try many, many companies and take what you can get. You only need to stay there for 6 months OTR or 1 year OTR to qualify for a company you prefer. For example, drive4marten.com only requires 6 months OTR experience to be hired. There are many, many more other than these that will hire you after 6 mos. or 1 year OTR experience. If a truck stop is near you, check the brochure rack for trucking company information. Best wishes. Hope this helps.

I agree with Chinatown. There are many companies and they all have differant standards when it comes to hiring. I've seen companies that will hire drivers with 3 accidents in a big truck. Try, try, try, and try some more. There is a company out there for you.

Go to unemployment and ask them to put u in a drivin school so you don't need a contract lots of these trainin compajys mess u over big time. Stay away from Crst at all means. Look into small company's in that area too they might hire u n put u in school. And if u went threw a temp service just list them not all the places they put you. Or if hired by company as temp make sure to put that. I wish u good luck. Oh don't always go for a company with fast trucks cuz it might not be as good as company with 65 mph trucks. Look at yearly average when lookin. Would tell u too check into Conway great company over here

Thanks for the reply's. On the issue of the temp jobs, Sadly the agency's don't always have a job available right when one ends so I've been bouncing around to different agency's. Also I forgot to mention but do to moving twice in a one year period, I lost a lot of my records from the past so I only have the last 10 months of employment which is divided into 5 different companies. I also plan to start calling the recruiting office to see if they can answer my questions and if they have received my application and if so what remarks or questions they may have for it.

See if you can contact the companies, they still may have records. they need to keep them for several years for tax purposes.

Its not like I worked that much in the last 3 years. Going back in time now, from the start of the employment information I have on file with them, I worked one other job for 2 months, then was unemployed for close to a year, then going back some more worked at a fast food joint for 3 months before leaving, and then more unemployment till I reach the 3 year mark of 18 years old. All of my employment information is right now for the past 10 months. Was easy to lose the other information since I only worked two other places in that time. Was going to college but only part time at around 2 classes a semester to see how I liked it but that did not turn out to be for me.

Looks like I will be moving on to plan B. A quick call to some of my temp agency's has landed me with a possible temp to hire job at two locations, one being a 3 months contract then possibility of being hired with a starting rate of $8/h or a job with a 1 year contract then a possibility of being hired on with a starting rate of $10/h. Plan B is for me to stabilize my work history and try again when I'm 23 years old to get into the industry as a truck driver. That's about 1 year and 6 months away for me. I will also finance my own CDL with either the Community Colleges CDL program or the Roadmasters CDL program near to me. I will also be saving money during plan B for the possibility of starting Plan C which is to put 30% down on a used semi that does not cost more than $35k and go in as an owner operator. Regardless of the difficulty I believe this is the only option available to me right now and need to jump on it. I will continue to watch this board and learn as much as I can about the industry so that I can be better prepared when I begin.
TRKRSHONEY Thanks this. -

Put plan c off for a good while.
Good idea trying to get a better job history. I know if i was a boss and someone came to with a history similar to to yours id pass. No sense in putting money and resources in someone who routinely switches jobs. I know you were in the temp agency stuff, but throwin my opinion out there.TRKRSHONEY and rgomez Thank this.
