Yeah you can any 8 hr up to 10 continuous sleeper is excluded from your 14. The problem this guy has is he is out of is 14. Your 14 will move up on a split, but not until you finish the last of the two splits, then it will begin where you ended the first of the two breaks.
I don't see the problem on making this load though, all you have to do is average 45 mph, and if you don't mess around for more than a hour out of your day the way I have it figured you will have your next 10 hr break done by the time you are unloaded in north Carolina.

Another point you may want to make to your dispatcher is you don't get your full 11 back after you finish a split. This example is assuming you have the on duty hours to go with drive hours. Say you drive 5 hrs sleeper 8 now you can drive 6 then say you go 2 hrs off duty come back, your fourteen moves to where you finished that first 8 hr break, but you can only drive 5 hrs until you would have to do another break of some kind, start another split what ever.

I do splits all the time. Love them. It gives you that extra 2 hours just in case you get sleepy down the road and you have nothing to worry about. So if instead you take the full 10 and drive 6 hours and need a power nap now you are going to be even later. So you utilize the time you lost instead of letting it go all down the drain. If you are pulling a refer you should get use to this sense lots of customers like to take their time getting you loaded and unloaded. Good day.

something you guys might be missing-
If only 7 hours were driven in 14, it's likely there is 2 hours consecutive off duty in there (Shipper perhaps). If there is, 8 hr line 2 will reset the clocks to start at the end of the most recent 2 hours consecutive line 1/2(and pause 14 through the 8hr). If there isn't 2 hours consecutive than 8 hr line 2 and you'll still be out of hours.
Splits are complicated, and most starter companies don't teach their drivers how to use them (mine included). This just makes things worse, because I see a lot of wrong information about them here. Even from experienced drivers. -
I can't them them on paper but my e-log does it just fine.

If you cant use them on paper, how do you know how many hours you will have after that 8 hour nap? If it's tight enough to need one, I'd want to know it was going to work before I went to sleep saying I'd make it on time. For what its worth, I wasn't referring to you when I said people give bad information, your scenario above works just fine.

Got 6hrs sleep and wake up to all this...LOL....Thanks for all the help.
I can't stay at the customer tonight so I have to stop about 25 miles out and I have to be there 12.5 hrs from now....can't leave for another hour, so I'm going to be pushing hard and I know it's going to take all that I have to get that 475 miles going through the mountains of WV and V with almost 80K.
Had a load the other day going from Houston to Ft. Smith...had 9.5 hrs to go almost 500 miles, told dispatcher I probably wouldn't make it since I had to go up 71, and I ran out of time 65 miles south of Ft. Smith.
