    Hello truck drivers,
I'm just wondering if anyone on this site drives on Highway 5A or the Coquihalla in BC frequently. I'm a journalism student looking to see why truck drivers would choose Highway 5A over the Coquihalla.

If I'm coming north from Osoyoos, I'll take the 3 over to Princeton and the 5A to Merritt.

If I'm coming east from the Vancouver area, I'll take the 5 from Hope to Merritt.

From Merritt, I'll usually just take the 5 over to Kamloops.

I'm usually looking for the best road for the fastest trip.

Looking at 5 and 5A I get the impression that 5 is faster because of a higher speed limit- it's built for speedy travel.
Why do you figure truck drivers choose 5A over 5 if it's slower? I've been told factors like saving on gas and having more opportunity to speed, lead truck drivers to choose 5A. Is there a toll between Kamloops and Merritt on highway 5 that these truck drivers may be avoiding? Or weight scales?
Do many accidents happen on highway 5 that may lead drivers to think 5A is safer to travel?

How about in the winter? As a truck driver which highway do you find more accessible in the winter?

Basically, yes. I have an assignment to do a follow-up on a story and I'm curious about the highways from a truck driver's perspective.

    A. I'm an owner/operator and I find that hwy 5A is easier on my engine and drivetrain and sometimes even on my brakes. Go drive with someone through both routes and you'll see what I mean.
    B. I carry cars. I am tired of cars blasting by me in the winter on the coke and pelting my precious freight with rocks. I have to pay for any damages, you see?
    C. I'm out here to make a living. Not to be harassed by a sale attendant with a stick up his ... He pulled me in for stupid reasons before and gave me a stupid smirk. Legalized corruption is all those guys are good for much of the time. They aren't mechanics. They aren't structural engineers. Many of them have no experience in the business. They have no place being in that scale house.
    D. Often times in the winter, I would prefer to take the 5A or the Fraser canyon over the coke, because there's less ice on the road or less blizzards. Sounds like a much safer alternative. If the chain up lights are on, then in my opinion, truckers should find another route or park the truck until conditions improve. Unfortunately, if you know the business, then you'd know that would never be possible.

5A has lower grade so less pull for the truck and no scale, how ever you take your life in your own hands on that road as with meany 2 lanes in bc I will stick to 5 for peace of mind
