I think it is a good idea, not sure of any rule or law against it. How I learned years ago, no such thing as a driving school.

Hi I just got my cdl this way.All he needs is a cdl permit and he is completely leagal to drive, just make sure he is listed as a driver on your insurance policy.I had never been in a big rig before and i pretty much drove from west coast to east coast twice.I make one hell of a steering wheel holder. Not a super trucker yet but getting a lot better.Good luck to both of you.

Your main problem is going to be with your insurance company .... Once you pass that hurdle familar yourself with stuff like Smith System training and other national training to stick in his file .... Make sure you have the attitude and patience to train .... Its not for everyone .... Other than that document his time and hours and have itbullhaulerswife Thanks this.

No one is required to go to driver training in order to pass their CDL. For most it is their only access to a truck in order to learn. As others said the biggest challenge will be the insurance.
I would suggest that when you first start teaching to do it for short periods of an hour or so. Also start off on a sunday in an industrial park where the roads will be quiet. That way it will allow him to try, but also not get too frustrated with the shifting as there will be a lot of grinding and missed gears. Once he gets the hang of it then you can work your way up to longer periods and slowly venture out into busier streets. -
Check with specific states to make sure no laws have passed recently regarding training. IL has passed a law and is about it implement it. And they aren't making a big deal out of it. Kinda trying to sneak it in.

I've heard rumblings throughout the industry that insurance companies are pushing for these laws to eventually take hold nationally. In addition, CDL schools are for these laws as it would greatly benefit them. Look for "education" lobbyists to begin doing there thing in the near future as relates to obtaining a CDL A through a licensed school. As these new laws take hold more companies will begin acclimating and changing their hiring procedures such as requiring new drivers to attend and graduate from accredited CDL schools. Some companies already have this requirement and some go even further by insisting new grads have a graduation certificate not merely from a CDL school but from a PTDI-approved school. -
Not sure how many people know about it. But actually the President signed the Highway Transportation Bill. Included in this bill is Entry Level driver training as part of there MAP21 program. This will require anyone wanting to obtain a CDL in 4 years to have to attend college. 120hr college accredited course. Night time/day time driving and class time. Minumum of 3-5 thousand dollars. So yeah its closer than alot of people think.

I'm in the same process training my fiance to drive, she has her Class B CDL and Class A permit in Il. After a 7 year absence in trucking it was tough for me to find a job driving again with over 27 yrs verifiable. Companies don't take construction trucking into consideration or a clean DAC and MVR. We found a small co. that will let me finish her training to get her Class A.
Good Luck and thanks for posting this.
