If I were to move our household items with the company truck, in my free time, would that be a reason to be fired?
Can you use the company truck to move your belongings so that you can save on moving?

Not sure about all companies, but Stevens Transport will not allow it.

Depends on the company. Do you mean use a company tractor and trailer? And bring your family along? I'd guess no, because there's insurance and cost-of-operation issues for the equipment--every mile costs. Got a particular company in mind? Ask 'em.

In the United States of America a company (and I hate the term because it seems that a company is something other then the people who make it up) does not have to have a reason to fire anyone. Employment is "at will." You are free to quit anytime you want to quit. And they are free to fire you at any time also. They do not have to give you a reason. If they do give you a reason, it can't be for certain things. It is up to you to prove they did fire you because of those things.
Moving, is not a protected thing. If the people who work there who have the power to fire, want you gone, they will fire you for that. If they don't, they won't. I am sure the second in command at the company would be able to do so. The problem is that it is illegal to use company resources for private use. The company deducts the fuel cost of the truck, the insurance cost, the cost of the truck itself and other things. If they do not charge you for it, then they must show it as wages you earned. If you have an accident while using the truck, no matter who is at fault, they are likely to get sued. There is no way they are going to give you permission to use their truck for that. So it comes down to do you think you can get away with it. I would not think it would be a very good chance of that. You will get caught, you will be fired.
Rent a truck from the local truck rental company. They are in business for that purpose. They have a right to make a living just like everyone else does. Don't try to live life so cheaply that you put yourself at risk.TRKRSHONEY Thanks this. -
If the truck has Qualcomm or PeopleNet they know if the truck is moved. If it didn't you could probably get away with moving in the same town. Get caught and it's possible termination for improper use of equipment and then your DAC gets hit. Plus trying to load a trailer that high up will kill you. I'd hate to try to load a 300 lb dresser in a semi from the ground.
Is it worth the $20 it costs to rent a Uhaul locally?TRKRSHONEY Thanks this. -
Do it. That's one of the perks of being a truck driver. Help you friends move too! Just disconnect any kind of tracking device the truck/trailer may have and be careful. If you have an accident you are screwed. Keep your lips shut. Tell one person at work and you are a goner.

You might check with Budget Rent a Truck, they use to have cheaper internet specials than going to the dealer directly. They did say that you could rent a cheaper version of the truck and if they didn't have the size they would bump it up to the next largest size; I never wanted to try that though if going a long distance because with my luck they wouldn't do it.
And everybody on here is right, if you use it it isn't covered by insurance, they get you for illegal use of company property and using fuel.
Not worth the chance I don't believe.TRKRSHONEY Thanks this. -
