Ok Guys And Gals i have my shiny new cdl and am going to be job hunting starting tomorrow. Because i had to get a WIA grant to go to school(I tried to pay 1st but didnt have the $ or credit) I had to get pre-hires i got them from Swift,Covenant, and Werner. I dont want to go with any of those companies at this time they are back-ups if im not working quickly. I am going to apply at a company here in cali that runs either cali washington oregon or cali nevada arizona they are the same company just two names and they choose what company they place you with. They are offering 100.00 a day training min two weeks,a 625.00 a week min guarantee for your first 3 pay periods after that(Bi weekly pay) and they pay 20-25% of load. They are a LTL reefer company with some time home 2-3 times a week. My other option is a friend who is a lease op with swift being as i have a pre-hire he would put me on his truck and train me (yes he is a mentor with the company) and pay me 450.00 a wk to start out but that one is otr. As a total newbie-i have worked around trucking terminals before just never drove- What do you guys and gals think i should do? Just looking for opinions here kinda torn about what i want to do.![]()

In my opinion working for or with friends never works out ! someone always gets hurt in the end !
Pmracing and Giggles the Original Thank this. -
i would rather have started out with someone I knew when I was training, feeling safe and comfortable would be a good idea, I personally would not let anything interfer with my friendship, as long as it's a good friend your relationship should grow stronger, that's just my opinion, good luck to you!

nothing will test a friendship like living in (at best) a 86 inch sleeper while touring the country... don't do it..
if the other company is paying percentage you need to know what kind of rates they are getting, garbage freight = garbage pay check
good luck -

Go with a big company that is doing otr. You don't want to be running up I-5 in the winter time. You can stretch your wings and miss some of those snow storms if you get something running south.
It would be hard for employee verification if you and your friend didn't work out. Some of the larger companies you mentioned have dedicated accounts and once you get comfortable with backing. You can probably jump on one of those and get home regularly. (swift/warner).
I would get hired on at swift and see if your friend can be you trainer and let them pay you instead of him.azbraindamage and Lilbit Thank this. -
hummmmm been a very long time since I was in this kind of position. I started working after leaving the farm for a family friend. Was good for me but that was years ago and oilfield work. Hauling pipe and drilling rigs. Longhaul would be quite a bit different. I would agree with many of the posts here go with your friend as a last resort.

ltl reefer is some crap work. Breaking down freight a lot of Appt. Stops that cause delays for the rest of the load. It is usually not ltl like Yellow or fedex where you show up bump it off and gone.
I would suggest you and all newbies take a job with a truckload carrier that offer different divisions and dedicated runs, such as Schneider.
The reason I say this is you can find a Division of trucking that suits your tastes and lifestyle without having to job hop. Then when you go looking for another job you will have some time under your belt with a short Resume and appear very reliable.
