I didn't know where to place this post, here or in questions by nontruckers. But here I am.

Some time ago I created a web app that could be used by truckers and other drivers as an alternative to CB. It requires a web link so I don't know how useful it will be. Also, as of now it's only set up for a handful of interstates: I-20,I-75, I-85, I-95.

    But, it's free and ad-free.

I would really appreciate any comments or suggestions.

    Some examples are as follows.
    http://simplifyconnections.appspot.com/?place=I20E-Shreveport

Each web page is oriented to a single stretch of highway indicated by the page name. For example "I95N-WestPalmBeach" refers to the stretch of I-95 north of West Palm Beach. On any given web page you will find links to the two pages before and after it in its direction, as well as a link to across the highway in the opposite direction. Also each web page is really a sort of partnership: one partner is a map and the other is a log, and the two are connected by a hyperlink at the top left margin of the page.

The app is currently just a proof of concept with lots of room for clarification and expansion. I am only presenting the app now to get a reading on how useful it might be to truckers on the job.

Thanks, in advance for your consideration.

And I would really appreciate a full description of the app. And what it does.

    Until then....it has no use.

Won't work with truckers. Too much input required, while in motion. Not that many of us use a laptop these days, unless we're parked.

Unless you automate the required actions, and use location services, and design a phone app. I doubt anyone here would utilize it.

That is great feedback. I had not thought of -nor even new about- location services. In fact I think it can be used on smart phones, etc if they have a browser. The log feature is more important than the map feature and would be fine on a phone size screen, I suppose.

I am especially worried about the captcha security input, regarding Too much input. Do you think there is an alternative, or is it needed even?

DOT regulations forbid using a cellphone while driving unless it's hands free. $2500 fine.

They would have to use it while parked.

I believe that covers using a smart phone and apps too.

In my wildest dreams I imagine one trucker getting caught behind an accident and at a full stop leaving a log message of the urgent type giving others a heads up, and that urgent message triggering an alert of some sort for others who are also on the same SimplifyConnections web page so that their sleeping smart phone produces an alarm. I don't know if that alarm is doable. Does anyone else?

    Condocruiser,

I cannot seem to quote your post.

But I want to know if hands on smart phones are available or will they be soon?

Also, would such an app be useful if it could only be used when stopped?

Mine currently utilizes voice activated apps and commands. I only have to touch the screen, to wake it.

"Hands on", I'm not sure what you mean by this. But for all intents, I can do most of the things I do on my PC, on my phone. With a few limitations.

As far as using an alarm notification method, yes it can be done. But once again, you'll need to meet the strict requirements of Apple to gain access to their distribution network. And a bit looser requirements of Google/Android. There is a third party market, that allows almost anyone to distribute apps.

How to do any/all of this? I can't tell you, as I have no background in app development.

Useful when stopped?? I doubt it, really.

I think you said on YouTube to warn others of traffic situations? Then other drivers would have to view while driving to know. I just making you aware of drivers can't play on the phone while driving unless they have voice commands. That's all. :)
