I have been talking to some of my overseas friends and eventually the topic of work came up. Blah blah blah, this and that, fuel economy comes up. Now I know that this is just one of the those things that will never be eradicated from this line of work, but, they seem to have clamped it down. At least on the Russian roads.

Big name companies have equipment that tracks consumption - not through gps or whatever is used over here - it is an actual fuel cap replacement with a sensor/meter that goes through the middle and into the gas tank. It connects to the home server via sim-cards, not gps, and relays real time consumption/fuel status in the truck.

Now, this does seem a bit ingenious, so here's my question - why is this not being used here? DOT Regs?

How expensive is this particular gizmo to implement? You know trucking companies won't spend a penny more than they actually have to. If they did, the owner might have to drive last year's BMW! Oh, the horror!!

Somebody that really wants the fuel will get it. Cordless drill popping a hole in the bottom of your tanks bye, bye fuel. Although locking caps will prevent the thief looking for easy..

I might get into trouble for saying this but I think the best solution for fuel thieves is when someone catches one (whether at your truck or someone else's) you bust one of their hands up with a hammer.
