I don't think the cost of living is that high in central Alberta, Fort Mac yeah. I haven't checked rents but food, gas & utilities might even be cheaper.

Anywhere that housing is in short supply, rent is expensive. Places like lloydminster and slave lake are also expensive. Plus if you don't live in a camp, then you need at least one vehicle to get around. More than 1 vehicle if you live with family. Now I've never lived in Alberta, but doesn't the weather drop below -40°C ? And if so, doesn't the car need to be properly equipped to handle the weather? Do people typically drive cars or trucks in places like slave lake? By the way, what type of vehicle would you recommend for places like slave lake?

Oh, for sure, cost of living. We will always spend-a-plenty. This is an area where we need to consider expectations.

My Brother in Calgary is offering free room & board. Fishhauler is couch-surfing in Stettler. Neither of us will buy a 2500' cab-over in Canmore anytime soon. Found a Kijiji listing whilst shopping for work in Drumheller. Full basement in a new house for $600 a month, utilities included.

Fishhauler is looking at a 21/10, me at a 22/6. He won't be flying Down Home at the end of every hitch. I might fly home every third month. And as much as I drool at the new Cummins powered BigHorn at Barrhead Dodge, my 12 year old Chrysler can still provide me another 100,00 kms.

I use Fishhauler as an example as we both have some OTR experience. The Patch offers us shifts that allow us healthier sleep, physical activity & digestive patterns that will improve our health. Plus we have an awareness of being away from home, and pace ourselves realistically.

What are we getting ourselves into? Arguably, Lifestyle Improvements. Our workplace has deteriorated, along with our services de-valued, with characters who run 5 guys to a cab and do their business through a hole cut in the floor of the bunk. Work in The Patch gives us a shot at the respect we once had 25 years ago.

Right now I'm couch surfing in Pincher Creek, visiting my sister while waiting for my start date. Did all the hoop jumping I had to, faxed the 26 pages of policy acknowledgments/consent forms. Now more waiting. Have to get a place in Red Deer but they pay my rent, flights and all travel expenses plus 21/14 rotation. Sleep will again be at a premium but all worth it. Will still get more sleep than my last job!! 24-50 hrs of no sleep is frowned on here but the norm with my former job.

i am training for sangel in Lloydminster did not drive as of yet...my plan was to bring my fam over buy a little house and make lloyd my home. i only had a few days to chat with people so do not have all the info that i need. the thing that i don't like already no immediate emergency care, no fam doctors that take new patients so with 2 little kids those are extremely important...i might call it quits :(

Don't call it quits! It's a good place to start. Work hard, save money! Facetime(if you have iPads or iPhones) Skype, call. Eventually you will have the experience to go where you want or transfer.

Well, you can find a better job, in a better location that suits more what you had in mind! More experience = more $$. I have been out here 2 weeks and haven't started training yet, with 5-6 more to go before my training and 21 day rotation is done. Not what I wanted or planned for but realize I have to do it. My family is 4500k away but I see and talk to them every night. My kids are 12,2,1 so it is that much harder but I know it is for the best.
