I have a degree in Aeronautical Science. Has it helped me in brokering or trucking; not a Da_n bit.. Most employers ask what is it! It short form it means that I can fly a Helo. and drive a truck at the same time. Hey; a multitasker........LOL
Does anyone think a college degree helped them get a trucking job?

My background is in industrial management and land survey/civil engineering.
Combination business management and industrial engineer hybrid degree.
Had more than one shipping person give me a line on why loads weren't ready. When you explain how their excuse sounds when you understand the manufacturing process and what they are telling you, the get a dumb look and say the load just isn't ready and production stopped the ball.
Some places I just don't go back to because it would be a constant delay issue when to see how the shop runs. You wonder how they stay in business.Last edited: Oct 17, 2012

I would say that a degree shows commitment to yourself and in the right company can be helpful in moving up the ladder, you never know what can happen, I don't know your major but let's say its in business if by being a good driver you start making a name for yourself after time you never know manager positions and you name it are in all these places , your college background may be a big benefit to you and your company , just do the best at the job at hand and good things will happen to you , good luck !!

Positive: It shows your ability to learn.
Negative: It shows your lack of commitment.

Never been anything but a driver
Pro: commitment
Con: lack of initiative -
I got into trucking while working my way thru college. I have three degrees: a BA in Theology, a MA in History and a MS in Physics.
So it helps me pray while consider my past sins in trucking and define physical and theoretical limits in passing an antimate object thru a defined event horizon.

You and I both. I paid for college while driving straight truck in the early and mid '80s. Now, after more than 25 years later and playing desk jockey for the most part of it I'm back in the saddle and couldn't be happier. Going back over the road long-haul in the spring. Lots of changes in those years and I'm trying to acquaint myself with the new rules (there are SO many) and reacquaint myself with the industry. Didn't even consider a refresher course, instead chose to go whole hog and go to CDL school like a newbie 'cause basically ... I am a newbie (again). But hey, the stress I've left behind in my former career is already paying dividends and I can't wait to get back on the long road. At least with that degree in Theology you can ponder life's mysteries and master plan of why you came back to trucking when driving all those miles and help pass the time!
