How hard is it to get service in the US on a freedom line, I've been told that since they aren't sold in the us anymore that it's difficult to find techs to work on them.

really as-tronic is one of the best tranny. really, used by paccar, daimler (but generally on buses), MAN/Navystar, Iveco and many other. So truck makers concider this tranny good. Volvo made I-shift that shifte better but really I have more problem with Ishift, Mercedes made new 12 ST EPS (DT12), may be this tranny is better (I worked on old EPS and EPS2), but availvable only on Daimler trucks.

OK, about ZF weak points. First is clutch servo. It goes bad when fork is worn, and rod scraps servo inside. And when plastic tube inside servo is scraped throught water may come inside and damage small clutch travel sensor board. So maintane clutch in time.
Clutch servo is made by Knorr Bremse and available used in Europe easily.

Other weak point - voltage supply. Tranny was made for EU trucks with 24V system, so for US trucks they use voltage doubler. Genue one is expensive and I use made in Voronez, Russia voltage doublers for EU trailers.

Shift unit made by Wabco is air driven. TCU is made by Wabco too. I cant say I had problems with TCU
