Hey guys, I work at a shop in Colorado and one of our regulars is in need of an in-frame on his 96 379. 1.4 million miles on the old girl. I've in-framed DT466's but this will be my first OTR. We're farming out cutting the block and installing the liners, but other than that its up to me.
So here's where we're at- 5EK52100, in need of CAT ReMan head, in need of Turbo, in need of at least 5 injectors (we put the 6th in a year ago), in need of a new CAC, new Rad, recommending water pump and oil cooler, needs new oil squirters (spaced removing them before pulling the pistons... DOH!) putting on a new damper, and the customer has requested we look into upgrades.
The current cam is a 136-1157.

To my knowledge- it is a 475HP setup. He would like to know what we need to get him to 550, possibly more. I'm told it will definitely need the 550+ cylinder packs, might need a cam, and the turbo could stand an upgrade. Not to mention the ECM needing a re-cal.

I am interested in knowing what is recommended for stock and/or rebuild of the old girl to get her making money again.

    Thanks all!

Not questioning your talents and ablilitys, but do you want to be practicing on someone elses motor? Would it be worthwhile to hire an independent mechanic with Cat experience to do a motor or two with you? Everyone has to learn. What kind of warranty is your shop giving? Again, no offense intended.

No offense taken- I was hired on under a 25-year veteran diesel tech who, though he went back to the dealer, I still call on on a regular basis, I've already had him come to the shop 3 times for advice and questions. He's a life-long friend with my boss, and is the one who suggested we hire out having the block cut and liners installed to proper height. I'm plenty confident with the rest of the work, and won't hesitate to call those who know if I feel unsure. I'd rather learn from another persons experience than have a paychecks worth of warranty work come in.
As for the aftermarket questions and such, he doesn't like to do anything but stock, so isn't sure on what to recommend in that department.
As for warranty, I don't know what the boss gives for sure on paper but I've seen him more than bend over backwards and eat a lot just to keep a customer happy, on several occasions.

If you're going to build it to a 550 spec then you'll need to upgrade some stuff

camshaft......i recommend the 500 hp marine can 130-9710

all the injectors will need to be changed to a 211-3024 or a 10R-8502 to match the fuel flow of the stock 5RK 550 injector

cylinder packs from a 5EK 550 will work

turbocharger from the 550 or an aftermarket turbo. I personally would go with a BorgWarner turbo

The ECM will need to be programmed accordingly. With these parts you can actually raise the power up substantially above 550 hp with the correct file in the ECM

    I'll send you a PM
