I'm gonna catch heat for this, I'm sure but here goes...

I've got a 2004 Sterling LT9513 with the MBE4000. I've been looking to swap out the paper filter with a K&N replacement in hopes of getting a little better fuel mileage and maybe a little more power, the truck is plenty strong despite what some others experiences have been with the same engine. So, here's what I've got so far...

My filter box uses Luber-Finer LAF-5871 air filter. That is also compatible/interchanges to Donaldson P533938, Baldwin RS3738, Fleetguard AF25469, Wix 46458 & 546458 and Napa 6458. I'm sure there are other filter makers out there that it also crosses to but I mean crap... that's enough, right? I contacted K&N because, naturally, they don't have anything listed on their site that crosses to anything I've got listed. Several emails between their tech department and I've come up empty handed.

LAF-5871 measurements are O.D. 13.46" or 342mm, I.D. 8.24" or 209mm, Height 17.73" or 450mm. Those are figures I got from some website, can't remember but it's very close if not 100% correct. Trying to find something on K&N's site that is close, especially for the ID and OD is kinda pointless and empty too. I also sent those measurements to K&N's tech department with hopes they could possibly help me figure out a solution, no luck. Asking if they had intentions of coming out with one that would work, well they don't know... was told to check back after the first of the year and see if they offered anything, nice.

SO... I was wondering if anybody here had a similar situation and what you might have done? Would it be possible to change the entire filter box over to something that there IS a filter by those guys for? What about making some type of adapter for the ID diameter since it's a radial seal filter and needs to fit over that lip inside the air box? Any ideas..., any at all? Also... how many of you guys ditch the inner filter, the smaller one, does it really serve a purpose? I usually ONLY haul asphalt with my truck, hardly ever haul plant material (rock) and never go on dirt jobs, this is a 16 wheel dump truck by the way. Anybody got suggestions or anything to help me figure out what to do?

    Thanks!!

I had a similar problem where nothing they make would crossover to my paper filter, so I ordered the one closest in size and shape and found it to be a direct fit. After the install I noticed an immediate increase in boost pressure, so I was able to lower my horsepower rating for a slight improvement in fuel economy.

Yea, I'm thinking of doing the same but if you look at their chart(s) and then look at my measurements, it's kinda way off. This ticks me off... man... #### it I wanted that filter...

The filter I purchased came installed in a new housing, that was the only way posslble for the upgrade. Have you looked into changing the housing? You can easily find tubing, elbows and connectors at Donaldson, Fleetguard or enginair.

No, I don't guess I'm smart enough to figure that out or haven't put much thought into that, maybe not enough thought.

Try to match the housing instead of the filter, on some of their filters the dims. they provide is for the housing and not the actual filter. Or you can post your housing dims. and a pic. or a drawing and I will try to help.

Alright, I'll see what I can come up with and post it here. I appreciate it.
