We bought a 97 shaker put some work into it and is doing just fine, like most people you will have to look at the maintance history, if it doesn't have one you either walk away or take it to a tructed mechanic to have it valuated. I would try to find one that has a lot of history, so you can see how long it has been since the parts were replaced, what was fixed or replaced, and how often. But it will be a decision you will have to make baised your current or future situation.

You can get NEW for $2k,power divider for $2500.
Other than that there is so much horse s h i t being spewed here it's rediculous. There is nothing wrong with buying a $20K truck cash. Apparently some on here don't think a $50k truck with 500k can't blow an engine or have other expensive repairs. Anything new or old can break and once you figure that out you realize that spending that extra money only gets you a newer truck, not a better one. If you can do minor repairs the cost of owning an older truck goes down significantly. But WTH would I know, I have been making $ with old high mileage trucks since 03.

Buying a truck is the easy part. Making money with it, is where the hard part comes in.

You will notice a lot of people are rather negative towards people making a go at getting a truck.

Remember you aren't buying a job driving a truck.

You are providing a service relocating someones property. You have to set yourself apart with the service you provide. Little things will set you apart and people will call you and you can call them for loads.

It will take you 90+ days to start seeing those relationships developing.

Been doing this for a few decades. Nothing negative meant, but trying to bring up points to make you think. In all these years, I've seen a heck of a lot of excellent truckdrivers do the very same thing. Few actually survive. It's not their ability to drive and seldom is it the truck they buy, unless they couldn't afford that much truck, to begin with. People make it or go broke with new trucks and with old ones. The big killer, no knowledge of decent, much less good, business practices. This is not an easy game to play. The more prepared you are, the better your chances of coming out ahead.

yeah driver it's a bit scary to me. i've heard many stories of guys folding after a couple of years, so i do appreciate the fact that you've given me some things to consider. i want to gain all the knowledge i can and then put together a solid plan. even if i have to wait a lil longer than i want to, i'm ok with it because i do want to be a sucess at this...

If you can make it past 12-16 months, you are doing pretty decent.

After 24-36 months, I'd say you had a decent enough business practice.
